LEADERSHIP
Dave Stearns, Board President Doug Sutter, General Manager/COO
Dear Forest Highlands Members,
I am delighted to officially welcome you all to the 2024 summer season at Forest Highlands Golf Club! As our operations have fully awakened, our diverse team of dedicated professionals is more enthusiastic than ever to share genuine member experiences in the summer months ahead. It goes without saying, but this is the time of year we all admire the most! Below you will find updates on the effects of our golf course soft opening program, our new “Elevating Excellence” mission, completed and ongoing capital projects, and our goals for improving communication with both you, our members, and internally with our team. We are pleased to report that the first year of our soft opening program for our golf courses has proven to be a notable success. Since the Meadow Course opened for play on May 3rd and the Canyon Course on May 10th, members have enjoyed outstanding course conditions, especially considering the time of year. This phased approach allowed us to dedicate the majority of our agronomy team to fine-tune each course individually prior to opening in the early spring, provide intimate training programs for staff in all departments, and remain fiscally responsible during a period of historically lower membership participation. I would like to extend my gratitude for your support and understanding as we carried this program out and send praise to our agronomy team for ensuring a celebrated golfing experience for our members from the very start of our 2024 golf season campaign. Inspired by our goal to return one of our highly distinguished golf courses to the Top 100 ranking, the club’s new “Elevating Excellence” mission was born. Though this initially spawned from our golf course agronomy and golf operations teams’ goals, now the entire Forest Highlands family has embraced this mission and is striving to elevate excellence with every opportunity. We have implemented new training programs for our staff, introduced new innovative service standards, and are constantly seeking ways to exceed our members’ expectations. We encourage and kindly ask that our members take pride in the mission by doing their part to care for the facilities and take the necessary time to educate fellow members, family, and friends about our united principles to ensure future success.
Come check out our new Tennis Pavilion!

LEADERSHIP
On behalf of the club, I am pleased to share positive updates on both our new capital and reserve projects. The Covered Bridge Pavilion, Tennis Pavilion, and Wastewater Treatment Plant Roof Repair capital projects are effectively complete. We still have a few minor details to finalize with the Covered Bridge Pavilion, and the exterior landscaping phase will be completed over the next month at the Tennis Pavilion. Our ongoing capital projects include the addition of a second 500,000-gallon potable water tank adjacent to our Canyon Course 2nd hole, along with a new 300,000-gallon effluent water tank to be added next to our current wastewater treatment plant. These projects are part of our commitment to continuously improving our infrastructure to provide the best possible facilities and offerings for our community membership. Effective communication is a key ingredient to executing a successful summer season. To enhance our communication efficiency, we adopted and launched Clubster, a cutting-edge private communication platform, on May 1st. I would like to thank those who have already subscribed to the new platform and encourage those who have not yet done so. We intend for Clubster to keep you informed about community events, updates, important announcements, and allow us to share content proudly from past events. Additionally, our leadership team members have prioritized internal team communication to ensure that every staff member is well-informed, accurately aware of club operations, and therefore overly responsive to your needs. I am pleased to share; the Covered Bridge Pavilion, Tennis Pavilion, and Wastewater Treatment Plant Roof Repair capital projects are effectively complete.
Our ongoing capital projects include the addition of a second 500,000-gallon potable water tank adjacent to our Canyon Course 2nd hole, along with a new 300,000-gallon effluent water tank to be added next to our current wastewater treatment plant.

LEADERSHIP
In conclusion, I would be remiss if I didn’t share how much I have enjoyed meeting so many of you during the first five months of my career here at Forest Highlands Golf Club. As you can imagine, the month of May accelerated my opportunities to enjoy introductions and participate in memorable conversations as our membership participation increased into the Memorial Day Weekend. Thus, the number of genuine welcoming sentiments and kindhearted comments you, our members, have shared with me of late, is more than I could have ever wished for. That said, your admiration for me and the team’s early season efforts has more than fueled our desire to do whatever is necessary as we continually strive to elevate our community to being the best in the Southwest! Thank you for taking the time to enjoy the June edition of our Voice in The Pines. Our team values your feedback and takes great care in contributing to the community through this publication. Wishing you and your loved ones a very safe summer season filled with memorable experiences and sophisticated fun in our paradise in the pines.
WHAT OUR MEMBERS ARE SAYING...
Club We love everything about our time here! Our cart broke down yesterday and Doug Sutter stopped and helped … totally above and beyond. We appreciate that he is trying to remember everyone by name. Dinner at meadow was fabulous, service perfect! We would rather eat “on the compound” because the food is so delicious than venture into Flagstaff for marginal experiences at high pricing. Our golf experience was also perfect yesterday. It’s obvious the time put into training and preparation for the season, and it is appreciated. The Golf Shop staff was very helpful as well. Good to be home in Flagstaff for a bit:) The staff, food, management, etc...is fantastic! We’ve been to several country clubs and hands down the best experience each time.
Sincerely,
Doug Sutter, GM/COO Forest Highlands Golf Club

WELCOME OUR NEW CANYON FOOD AND BEVERAGE MANAGER; LEXI BASSET!
Hello Forest Highlands members! My name is Lexi Bassett, and I am thrilled to be joining the team this season as the new Food and Beverage Manager at the Canyon Clubhouse! A little bit about me and my journey: I was born and raised in Peoria, Arizona and spent most of my childhood and teen years riding dirt bikes in the dunes or taking part in various sports such as cheer, dance, and gymnastics. (No, I can’t do a backflip anymore). After juggling school and sports for a better part of my youth I decided to hang up my ballet shoes and start working. I first dipped my toes into the hospitality industry at 17, starting as a hostess at Scorpion Bay Bar and Grill on Lake Pleasant. There, I got my first taste of the food and beverage world and quickly learned the ropes of customer service. Right before my senior year of high school I transitioned to Arrowhead Harley Davidson, working in the motor-clothes department. I had such an amazing experience working there and it was truly a pivotal point in helping me grow out of my shell and the people there taught me how to have a backbone. After a year of accessorizing bikers and bike-enthusiasts it was time for me to head up to Flagstaff to pursue a degree in Business Management with a minor in Business Law. Once the school year took off, I realized my passion for hospitality persisted, leading me to Arizona Snowbowl for their 2020-2021 season. At Snowbowl, I started in an entry level position and steadily climbed the ladder, eventually becoming Assistant Food and Beverage Manager in October 2022. Seeking diversity, I spent my summers at Pine Canyon Golf Course as a server and bartender. This is when I fell in love with the club environment and started to think about a long-term career in hospitality. After graduating in May 2023, my boyfriend Tim and I ventured to the East Coast where I took on the role of Food and Beverage Manager at Stowe Mountain Resort in Vermont. However, the icy winters made us yearn for the warmth of Arizona, leading us back to Flagstaff this past March. I do miss the maple syrup in Vermont if you were wondering.

FOUNDATION
Ethan Braunstein MD, Board Chair, Forest Highlands Foundation
The Foundation welcomes you to another great season at Forest Highlands. During the off season several important things happened. When the final numbers came in, the Arizona Community Foundation had donated 1.3 million dollars to local nonprofits. Of that, your Foundation contributed $280,000, or about 20 % of the total. This represents more than any other local foundation with the exception of the Arizona Community Foundation itself. Our overall reputation in Flagstaff has been greatly improved by your contributions to local welfare.
Indicative of this is the awarding of the Spirit of Philanthropy Award of the Association of Fundraising Professionals to the Forest Highlands Foundation. The award signifies contributions of time, talent of the board members, and, of course, financial contributions in diverse settings such as Flagstaff in an effort to improve the lives of the citizens of the community. Our board chair, Marcus Sipolt, and his wife Darla were also honored with individual Spirit of Philanthropy Awards. Congratulations, Marcus and Darla. The next time you are in the lower level of the Canyon Clubhouse take a look at the award, along with the other awards and thank you letters from local organizations. Our commitment to Flagstaff our the past 25 years has been greatly appreciated.
We were nominated for this award by Catholic Charities of Northern Arizona (CCNA). This is especially fitting, as CCNA not only provides outreach for stable housing, food and hygiene kits for the unsheltered here in Flagstaff, but it also acts as a clearing house and coordinator for efforts by the other local human services nonprofits. CCNA thus is in a position to know bow integral we are to the important work of all the community based nonprofits and other funding foundation and agencies in Northern Arizona. There are many things to look forward to this season. Plans are well underway under the leadership of Vickie Selzer for the Denise Martinez Memorial Tournament. Sponsorships are going quickly and several fivesomes have already signed up at a pace greater than last year. We again will have a Rock ‘n’ Roll theme for the tournament. Start thinking about signing up if you’re planning to play. If you would like to know more about Denise, please read the article about her in the April VIP, written by Will Godfrey. Also, as you know, we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Foundation this summer with a Gala on July 13. Thanks to Phyllis Banucci and Michelle Arena for spearheading this effort. They’ve recruited many capable volunteers, and the event should be a great success. We’ll have more information as the date draws closer. As always, if you would like more information about the Foundation you can contact me beigestein@gmail.com or any of the board members. If you would like to volunteer at any of the worthy nonprofits that we support, either take a look at our page on the FH website or get in touch with me. Thanks again for your interest in the Foundation and welcome back.

REGISTERING ON GIVESMART? THIS IS SOMETHING NEW….. GiveSmart is a comprehensive fundraising tool that allows us to integrate event registration and auction bidding in a secure and efficient platform. No need to follow-up for your table number. This will be communicated to you on your smart phone. When you arrive, an easy online self-check-in via your phone lets us know you’re here so no standing in registration lines. Bidding on auction items is really where this system shines. This year you’ll be able to see the silent auction items online and bid using your mobile device. Silent auction bidding will open about a week before the Gala and conclude the evening of the Gala, July 13. You’ll be able to track bidding on items you’re really interested in to make sure you don’t miss out. It’s easy and it’s slick. You’ll be receiving more information about the silent auction later via email.
CAN I PUT ALL OF THIS ON MY CLUB CHARGE…. REGISTRATION AND AUCTION BIDDING?
Unfortunately, no. When you register via the secure GiveSmart link, it will ask you for a credit card to which your dinner registration will be charged. Similarly, if you wish to participate in the silent or live auction, your credit card must be entered in advance. If you are a silent or live auction bid winner, your card will be automatically charged. No need to follow-up separately with payment. It’s a seamless, secure and accurate system. I HAVE A FEW MORE QUESTIONS. WHO CAN I CONTACT? Contact Gala chairpersons, Michelle Arena (marena3008@gmail.com) or Phyllis Banucci (pbanucci@gmail.com).

ADVANCED TEE TIMES
Now 7 days a week!
**New email address: att@fhgc.com** NEW EMAIL ADDRESS: ATT@FHGC.COM
Every Membership account will have 2 Advance Tee Time requests which can be made during the 2023 golf season. The ATT program allows members to request a tee time up to 14 days in advance, by email rather than Foretees, any day of the week. The Golf Shop will reserve 10 tee times per day (5 at Canyon, 5 at Meadow) Monday - Friday, on the hour from 10am to 2pm. For Weekends and Holidays (Saturday, Sunday and Holiday Monday’s), ATTs will be limited to 6 times per day (3 per course) beginning at noon, guest restrictions still apply. Requests can only be made via email to: ATT@fhgc.com beginning at 7am sharp, 14 days or less in advance of the requested tee time. The request must list all 4 full names and identify status of each player - ie guest, immediate family guest, member, etc. and must include AT LEAST ONE GUEST’S NAME. If more requests are received than available ATTs, a waitlist will be created using the email timestamp. If ATTs remain available at the 7 day mark, they will be opened to the entire membership on Foretees. Further details and cancellation policy: Once an ATT is reserved, it may be cancelled up to 7 days before the date of play and released to the waitlist/ Foretees system and be used again at another time. If the ATT is cancelled or guest names are replaced with members between 1 and 7 days, the ATT is considered used. On the day of play any changes from Guest to member will result in the member being charged an accompanied Guest Fee of $180 per player. This should keep the ATT requests limited to those who deem it especially important.

PRESERVING THE COURSE: ETIQUETTE
WHAT OUR MEMBERS ARE SAYING...
Proper golf course etiquette extends beyond just playing the game—it involves actively caring for the course to preserve its beauty and integrity. This includes promptly repairing ball marks on the green using a divot repair tool and filling divots with sand or seed provided on the carts and to walkers. Raking bunkers after use ensures that golfers encounter smooth surfaces free of footprints. Respecting the rules for golf cart usage, including designated entry and exit points marked by Forest Highlands wood posts, is essential for maintaining the pristine conditions of the golf course. It's not only a responsibility but also a privilege for each golfer to contribute to its preservation. Adhering to these guidelines ensures the course remains in optimal condition for all players. By entering and exiting the course at designated points, golfers help minimize turf damage, especially during inclement weather when grass is vulnerable. Additionally, keeping carts on the fairway and away from rough and native grass areas is important to keep the course's natural beauty. To further enhance the golfing experience, players are encouraged to abide by a pace of play policy, ideally completing a round within 4 hours and 10 minutes. In instances where faster groups are behind and there are open holes ahead, players are urged to either allow faster groups to play through or skip a hole to maintain course flow. This proactive approach, facilitated by player assistants, ensures that all golfers can enjoy a seamless and enjoyable round. Elevating Excellence to the Top 100 by2027 requires a commitment to the care and preservation of the courses by all members. continued on the next page >>>

MAKE ONE FIX TWO Fixing a ball mark on the green is crucial for maintaining the quality of the putting surface and ensuring a smooth roll for future putts. Here's how to properly fix a ball mark: Locate the Ball Mark: Identify the indentation left by the ball's impact on the green. It's essential to repair it as soon as possible to allow the turf to heal quickly. Insert the Tool: Use a ball mark repair tool. Insert the tool at the edge of the depression, not in the middle, to avoid damaging the roots. Leverage Technique: Gently push the tool handle forward, pulling the grass toward the center of the depression. Repeat this step several times, working around the edge of the mark until the depression is level with the surrounding surface. Pat Down: Lightly tap down the repaired area with your putter or foot to ensure it's flush with the green. Final Check: Inspect the repaired ball mark to ensure it's level and smooth. If necessary, make additional adjustments to achieve the desired result. By properly fixing ball marks on the green, you contribute to the overall health and playability of the course, ensuring an enjoyable experience for yourself and other golfers.
