LEADERSHIP
Dave Stearns, Board President Doug Sutter, General Manager/COO
Dear Forest Highlands Members,
As we reflect on the first quarter of the 2024 calendar year, I would like to share my gratitude once again for the warm welcome and ongoing support I’ve received from both our dedicated team members, and you, our wonderful membership. The growing sense of belonging I’ve experienced speaks volumes about the strong community fellowship which defines our beloved Forest Highlands Golf Club.
“ Our upcoming programming promises to deliver one of our best seasons yet! ”
Over the past few months, our team has been hard at work preparing for the transition into our celebrated summer season while continuing to offer outstanding winter season services. As we look forward to the highly anticipated summer programming, I am more than excited to share our progress and updates with you on behalf of the entire team. Our upcoming programming promises to deliver one of our best seasons yet! Our dedicated leaders in the golf, racquets, recreation, and food & beverage departments are crafting events and activities tailored to engage members of all ages and interests. We are highly confident that the 2024 offerings will provide a rich variety of experiences that appeal to every demographic of our membership. In addition to our beforementioned efforts, our leadership team has been actively engaged in professional development initiatives. We’ve been visiting other top-tier clubs, attending industry conferences, and collaborating with respected leaders in the club business to ensure we stay at the forefront of trends and bring innovative ideas and insights to our club. Each department has also been focused on recruiting new team members for vital leadership roles and essential seasonal support positions. While it is important to employ new and fresh talent who offers unique perspective, I am pleased to confirm we will have many familiar faces once again as our returning seasonal staff members’ numbers are high. Having such a talented and dedicated team is necessary if we are going to succeed in exceeding member expectations while delivering unparalleled service to all who spend valuable time with us in our Paradise in the Pines this year.

LEADERSHIP
Another key area of focus over the last couple of months has been finalizing the 2024 committee rosters. As you all know, our committees play a pivotal role in shaping the club’s direction, programs, and initiatives. To support this, our elected Board of Directors assembled diverse and dynamic groups of individuals who bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the table, ensuring that our club continues to thrive and evolve. As previously shared in our March 21st, weekly newsletter, we were so grateful for the overwhelming response from members who volunteered to serve our community this year. However, due to the high number of volunteers, regrettably, some were not appointed to a committee. For those who were not selected in 2024, the Committee Chairs welcome you to participate in any committee meetings throughout the year and encourage you to once again volunteer in 2025. In conclusion, I want to reaffirm my personal dedication to deepening my understanding of our esteemed club and community. The invaluable stories, insights, and experiences shared by members who have reached out to me have greatly enriched my perspective. This newfound knowledge empowers me to lead more effectively and make informed decisions that resonate with our shared values and the evolving expectations of our members. For those of you with whom I haven’t had the opportunity to connect through email or in person, I warmly invite you to share your Forest Highlands stories when the time is right for you. Your contributions will further highlight our history and pave the way for an even brighter future together! Thank you for taking the time to enjoy the April edition of our Voice in the Pines. Each team member who has contributed dedicated significant time to ensure that this edition is both informative and supportive of our member’s needs. We hope you will share in our excitement about the experiences that lie ahead at Forest Highlands Golf Club.
Wishing you and your loved ones a wonderful month ahead filled with joy, laughter, and memorable moments!
Sincerely,
Throughout the season I invite you to have a juice with me. The first of which takes place on Wednesday, May 22. Come and share your stories with me.
Doug Sutter, GM/COO

WHAT OUR MEMBERS ARE SAYING...
CLUBSTER
We're excited to introduce Clubster as our upcoming platform for all club communications!
Overall, a great family friendly environment for our children and grandchildren.
Clubster, resembling Facebook in layout, is a private social media app exclusively for Forest Highlands members, ensuring an ad-free experience. As an invite-only social network for club members, Clubster will not only replace the need for text messaging but also cut down on associated costs—coming in at only ¼ of the expense of texting throughout the year! Text messages will still be utilized for emergencies, but our social content will be on Clubster, and of course, in the Voice in the Pines, and on the website.
Because this is a golf community first, not every other fad sport that comes along. The courses are fantastic, and the staff is wonderful!
The quality of the club, the quality of the staff, friendly responsive, two outstanding golf courses

GOLF
We are excited to announce several updates and initiatives as we gear up for the 2024 golf season at Forest Highlands Golf Club.
SOFT OPENING PLAN FOR 2024: The decision to implement the proposed"Soft"Opening Plan for 2024 is driven by our commitment to enhancing member experience, optimizing operational efficiency, and improving golf course conditions. By strategically staggering the opening of our golf courses, practice facilities, and F&B operations while maintaining our original opening date, we aim to accommodate the expected weekend influx of members and facilitate essential pre-season agronomic practices in tandem. This approach not only ensures optimal course conditions for the summer season but also provides opportunities for savings and more effective staff training programs. Additionally, we will be offering a Par 3 experience on the Meadow range during the afternoons, when our courses are dedicated to our agronomy team. Innovative and unique events such as this demonstrates our commitment to enhancing member satisfaction and accommodating early arrivals. GUEST FEE ADJUSTMENT: As part of our efforts to ensure the sustainability and continued excellence of our club, the Board has decided to adjust our accompanied 18-hole guest fees from $150 to $180. This increase, the first in several years, gets us closer to aligning with the fee structures of top clubs in Arizona and prestigious mountain clubs across the country. We believe this adjustment will allow us to maintain exceptional value for our guests while also supporting the ongoing improvement of our Club and services. Please note that this 2024 adjustment solely pertains to guest fees, and there will be no changes to immediate family guests or cart fees. In the coming years, we will continue to examine rates of like clubs and increase golf fees in the best interest of Forest Highlands as needed. PERSONNEL CHANGES: We have some personnel changes to announce. Ms. Meghan Whittaker, our esteemed colleague and Head Professional at the Meadow, will be departing from our team. In her place, Ms. Sarah Johnson will be stepping into the role of Operations Manager for the Meadow.Additionally, we are excited to welcome back Mr. Steven Mauser, who will be taking on the role of Head Professional at the Canyon. We have full confidence in their abilities to continue providing the elevated Forest Highlands Experience we have all adore.

2024 Golf TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE
OPERATIONAL UPDATES: Due to increased compaction on our tee sheets, we have introduced new features such as a tee time waitlist with autofill from ForeTees and a dedicated email address for Advance Tee Times (ATT@fhgc.com) to enhance member convenience and experience. We encourage everyone to review the upcoming calendar of events for the 2024 golf season, which includes exciting tournaments, fitting days, and other special events. CLOSURE DAYS FOR MAINTENANCE: Beginning the 2024 golf season with a‘soft’opening allows our golf maintenance operation some distinct advantages. The staggered start will provide flexibility in staff training, optimize budgeted resources, and allow for essential maintenance practices that contribute to exceptional course conditions. The closure days in early May will enable us to perform agronomic practices and maintenance tasks that are difficult to complete with golfers on the courses, ensuring our courses are set up for success in both the near- and long-term future. Our goals for closure days are twofold: to carry out practices that we can’t effectively complete while needing to set up our golf courses or with golfers around us, and to ultimately contribute to regaining our former top 100 prestige to Forest Highlands Golf Club. These practices include leveling sprinkler heads around greens, working in the creeks and lakes on Canyon holes #4, #5, and #13, and Meadow holes #5, #7, and #14 to repair water features and leaks. They also involve agronomic necessities such as de-thatching or vertical mowing of greens (all greens on both courses), tees, and fairways (#2 and #3 Canyon and #5, #14, and #16 Meadow), followed by sand topdressing. There is a time- consuming element to cleaning up the debris left behind. Other tasks we are targeting during these nine days of closure include edging all the cart paths on both courses, sodding and/or seeding thin or dead areas that have not come through winter healthy, bunker work including edging, sand distribution, or addition of sand as needed, weed removal from teeing areas, moss removal from Meadow greens, and practice area maintenance at the Canyon including bunker maintenance, topdressing the teeing area, target green maintenance, and weed eradication. If you have any questions or comments regarding these updates, feel free to reach out to our dedicated team. We are determined to provide you, our members, with the best possible experiences and always doing the best for Forest Highlands Golf Club!

April 2024 Denise Martinez Remembered... and the many reasons a tournament honors her name
by William Godfrey, Forest Highlands Club Historian
“It is not the length of life... but the depth of life.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Denise Martinez was one of those individuals who had depth of life. She was beloved by Forest Highlands members and most everyone she encountered over her shortened life. In 2008, at 46, Denise died tragically in a motor scooter accident in Truckee, California. Denise held two positions at Forest Highlands. Initially, in the late 1980s she was an assistant professional to Mark Johnson, PGA, our first Director of Golf. In 1995, Martinez was hired away from Troon North, where she was head professional, to replace Johnson at Forest Highlands. She was later named Director of Golf, one of the first women in Arizona to hold the title. In a March 2024 phone interview with Johnson at Martis Camp in Truckee, California, Mark shared his memories of Denise. “She was a very humble and gracious person. She was so accommodating. We were lucky to have her on the summer staff. It was never about her, always about someone else,” Johnson said. “Denise was the ultimate Hospitalian. She was also a great player who under- played her playing ability.” DENISE - THE PLAYER As a junior at McClintock High School in Tempe, Martinez won the State girls’ individual title in 1979 by a single shot over the legendary Heather Farr. But even in her teens, Denise wanted to share her success with others. An example of her graciousness was shared by Amy Gosla Walker, a teammate. who posted her memories on Legacy.com. “I was on the golf team at McClintock with Denise. We had some great times together. I remember how small and petite she was, but boy could she hit the ball far,” Gosla recalled in late September 2008. “She was very humble about her championship title as a junior. She wanted all of us to be in the picture with her holding the 1st place trophy. Unlike the rest of us high school girls, she didn’t like all the attention. After all these years, I can still picture her beautiful smile.”

FOUNDATION
In 1980, Denise was inducted into McClintock High’s Hall of Fame. After her successful high school career, Martinez attended the University of Arizona where her playing abilities earned her four varsity letters. She had a stellar career, but also found time to complete a degree in Business Administrarion. Denise was honored by the University years later and inducted into the U of A’s Golf Hall of Fame. Her plaque resides on the wall alongside Arizona notables, Annika Sorenstam and Lorena Ochoa. Following college, Martinez attempted to play on the LPGA tour. At qualifying school she missed earning her card by a single shot. As if that were her fate, she didn’t attempt a second time. Denise then took on and completed the steps required to be a Class “A” PGA professional. A DIMUNITIVE DYNAMO At just over five feet, the dimunitive Denise was a dynamo with a club in her hand. However, her size often created some awkward, yet, humerous vignettes. According to Bruce Frobes, former President of the Homeowner’s Association and prior member with his wife Cobe, shared one of those stories. “On at least one occasion the pro shop received a call from a member explaining there was an underage girl driving a golf cart on the path of the Canyon Course and someone needed to check it out,” he chuckled.
Frobes also shared her gracious side. “I was Chairman of the Marketing Committee for the 2006 USGA Mid-Amateur Championship. A few years prior we learned that Forest Highlands was selected to be the host for the tournament. That day, Denise knew I was playing golf on the Canyon,” he explained in a phone call. “She took a golf cart and found me on the 15th hole. Denise handed me an envelope with the message of our selection and she also had typed a message to give to me. That was Denise! “ Lou Weinstein, a member since 1988, relates another of the awkward, yet humerous situations. “My wife, Laura and I got to know her very well and had great affection for her. “I signed up for a Las Vegas pro-am, an expensive charity event. I was required to bring my own caddy,” Weinstein explained. “I asked Denise if she could recommend someone to go to Las Vegas and caddy for me. Without hesitation, she said, ‘Yes. I’ll do it.’ With Laura’s approval, Denise was my caddy.” “On Day 1 of the event, I was hitting balls on the range. Denise was on my bag next to me,” Weinstein explained. “It was a Titleist Demo day and they had their latest high-end clubs to test. A Titleist rep approached me and suggested I try out their new ‘very expensive...but-worth-it, driver.’ In a desire not to embarass myself I pointed to the 5 foot, 2 inch, Denise and asked the rep if my caddy could try it first.

He glanced at her and said, ‘I don’t think so, this is for serious male golfers and then muttered,‘Have you ever played before?’ Denise responded,‘Sure, I tried it a few times...I like the game.’ ‘OK, he warned, try not to break it.’ “ “Denise picked up the driver, took a few practice swings, then placed a ball on the tee. If a shot of 265 yards down the middle with a draw was possible, that’s exactly what she did and repeated it a couple of more times,” shared Weinstein. “She then handed it to back to the rep and said, “It’s nice, but I hit my driver farther. I guess I’m used to it.” The red-faced rep apologized profusely and could only say. ‘Wow!’ Denise and I looked at each other, giggled and walked away.” DENISE - THE TEACHER Over many years Denise developed a good relationship and befriended Tom Weiskopf, the PGA professional and course designer, who died in 2022. Weiskopf shared this Martinez remembrance from their time at Forest Highlands, “Everybody loves Denise, she does everything well. She is a great player and she’s also a wonderful teacher, one of the best in Arizona.”

An example of her instructional skills has stood the test of time.
Vickie Selzer, Chair of this year’s Denise Martinez Pro-Am tournament shared this memory. “I arranged a playing lesson with Denise many years ago. When we got to the 2nd tee on the Canyon, I aimed way left away from the huge boulder just in front the women’s tee. Denise asked, ‘Why are you aiming over there?’ I said,“Because of that big rock. She immediately replied,“Don’t let the rock win, and then she said, ‘Defy the Rock!’ Which I did then, and have done ever since. I think of Denise everytime I play that hole.” THE FIRST DENISE MARTINEZ PRO-AM The tournament, honoring Denise’s life, got its start in 2010 with the help of Tim Thomas, along with assists from other Forest Highlands members. “I wanted to resurrect a golf tournament as a fundraiser for the Forest Highlands Foundation with the encouragement from Tom O’Toole,” explained Tim Thomas, a former Chair of the Foundation and member along with his wife, Hedy, since 1991.“Jeanne Hall was a Board member who suggested we honor Denise and name the event after her,” shared Thomas in a 2023 interview at the Canyon clubhouse. “We invited the entire Martinez family that first year and they were touched by the honor. Her parents and siblings were in attendance. We wanted to keep the first tournament small with the hope to build on it,” Thomas offered.

“The ceremony and dedication of the bridge took place on the 18th hole of the Canyon Course. It was a perfect morning, a little foggy, a bit misty,” explained Thomas, a bit misty-eyed himself, as he recalled the morning. “ I wanted to make sure Denise’s family saw the plaque first. I took a cart with the Martinez family down to the bridge in the middle of the fairway. Then we returned to the Canyon clubhouse.” “After the player’s practice was complete, Matt Bailey and I spread the word for the 60-70 participants and the family to move on down in their carts to the 18th hole bridge. I took the young bagpiper we hired from Williams and his mother back down near the green,” Thomas explained. “Then I positioned myself so that I could signal the young man when the members and Martinez family were in place by the bridge.”
SAVE THE DATE SATURDAY, JULY 13
“The piper started playing and walked from the edge of the 18th green back towards the bridge,” recalled Thomas. “Judge O’Toole, then Chairman of the Forest Highlands Foundation spoke. He read the words on the plaque and offered some remembrances. Then, Peter Martinez, Denise’s father, spoke on behalf of the family.”

Dear Members,
I was so hoping at the time of writing this that I would see spring flowers blooming with the promise of warm weather to come! Alas, mother nature has decided to keep me waiting just a little longer. It has given me the time to prepare the Calendar of Events with all your favorite clinics and events and to be busy with the design and layout of your beautiful new expansion. The Wespac team assures us that all is on schedule which means before you know it, summer will be here! I have included the Event List for 2024 and a glimpse of our adult weekly clinics, along with our junior programming dates. I am excited to welcome Garrett Lakey back for his 3rd season at Forest Highlands! Garrett will once again oversee junior and adult development and leagues, and I will oversee the junior excellence, adult advanced and event portion of the calendar.

DWELLINGLIVE “RESIDENT/GUEST” ONLINE PROGRAM – REVIEW & LIST CLEAN UP
Thank you to the many members that have worked with Security on a community Guest/Visitor list cleanup project in the past. It is believed at a minimum an annual maintenance/review of guest lists creates reliable lists and minimizes unauthorized community entry. Security has begun a review of guest lists and in April if your list is found to be extensive, a copy of your list will be emailed with suggestions on how to reduce the list and manage going forward. A few quick tips when using your dwellingLIVE account: 1. Consider using the “PERMANENT” guest option for only family members and a few regular contractors such as a cleaning company and a handyman; and 2. Contact Security to establish your own personal dwellingLIVE account so you can maintain your own list. The account can be arranged by emailing security@fhgc.com and asking to set up the account; please provide your member number when requesting the account.
Security monitors 911 dispatches and responds to emergencies for the purpose of supporting emergency first responders and members/guest/employees. If you have questions or want to provide information to Security, please contact us.
