and pickleball functions. New parking and access would be behind the building. All visitors for either real estate or pickleball would pass through security. We would be careful to add landscaping and facility enhancements to make sure our entrance remains visually appealing. We will engage a sound abatement professional to help minimize any noise from the facility. Please access the site plan here as well as the pickleball flyer information page here to answer questions concerning this important project. And below are some important points to consider before you vote: *To be successful, the Club CC&R’s require 2/3 YES vote from the membership to change the plat. So a member who doesn’t care or just doesn’t vote equals a no vote. Talk to your fellow members and encourage them to spread the word! *As a result of our long process, it’s clear that this site offers the fastest and least expensive path to a dedicated pickleball facility. If this vote fails, we’ll have to regroup and look to one of the other options which will possibly take years longer and definitely cost significantly more money. Beware if you hear otherwise from members who haven’t been involved in the process! *Pickleball is the fastest growing amenity added at clubs around the country. Pine Canyon and Flagstaff Ranch currently have dedicated pickle ball courts.
What an exciting time of year to be a member of Forest Highlands! I don’t know about you, but in my 22 years as a member I can’t think of many reasons to be more thrilled than the prospect of another season at our special place in the pines. As always, the Leadership Team is ready to go with tried and true offerings in their various departments, as well as exciting new ones. Bill Abbey and his team are working overtime to get the courses in shape, and as usual there are some areas requiring some patience. We’ll have a temporary green for a while on Canyon 9, and some other holes have a few minor challenges as well. In Food and Beverage, don’t forget that our menu pricing includes gratuity. If you’re comparing value verses restaurants in town, this factor is important to consider!
Here’s hoping for nice weather in May so we can kick off the season in style!
In addition to kicking off the season, May is extremely important to the Club for another reason. This is the month the membership has the opportunity to VOTE YES to the plat change amendment at the sales office to allow pickleball. As many of you know, the Club has been working on a solution for our pickleball deficiency for years. As the result of an exhaustive process, the Board has unanimously approved moving forward with the recommendation to build a dedicated pickleball facility where the parking currently is for the sales office. The building would remain and be dual purposed for both real estate office functions

As the pre-eminent Club in Northern Arizona it’s imperative that we catch up!
*We have funds ready for this project and it is in this year’s budget. Operating costs will be negligible. And this popular amenity will protect and enhance our home values as well! So, in a nutshell, the Board believes there is no good reason not to vote YES to this plat change. Spread the word! IMPORTANT!! I’m sure you are all on the edge of your seats awaiting the Annual Member meeting, which will take place Saturday, May 28 at 3:00PM in the Canyon Clubroom. Please attend in person or join remotely to get important updates concerning the Club’s plans and financial information. And chime in if you have a question or comment. See you then! One last thing. As a new season gets underway, I’d like to impress on every member, family member and guest to be sure to treat all staff at Forest Highlands with dignity and respect. Our staff is here to serve you and year in and year out they do their best. Disrespect of staff is subject to severe disciplinary measures, and our goal is to have zero issues this season. Thanks for your help with this important piece of our Clubs personality!

CLUB NEWS PICKLEBALL FACILITY: Plat Amendment vote needed
A vote by the Membership is required in a two-thirds majority to amend the CC&R’s to allow the current Real Estate Office to become a dedicated Pickleball Facility VOTING TIMELINE IS MAY 1 – JUNE 1, 2022
VOTE NOW
What we need from You: A YES vote of two-thirds of the entire membership is needed for amendment to pass. That means 574 out of 861 members must vote yes.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
CAPITAL FUNDING is in the bank and budgeted. The cost for the operation of the new facility would equate to only $1.15 per member per month increase in our dues.
THE LOCATION has been decided. The Sales Office Tract is the most cost-effective, easiest to build and provide the least proximity to homeowners. Beautification and site protection is a top priority for the site.
DEMAND IS HIGH The demand for pickleball play at Forest Highlands has outstripped the current facilities. Dedicated courts are needed. Both Pine Canyon and Flagstaff Ranch have four dedicated courts.
INCREASED HOME VALUES Per Architectural Digest, Pickleball has replaced golf as the most coveted sports amenity in luxury residential developments. It is the fastest growing sport with 39% increase according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association’s 2021 Topline Participation Report
KEEP FOREST HIGHLANDS #1 Keep Forest Highlands the #1 Premier Country Club in Northern Arizona. Your home will be more desirable if Pickleball is an offered amenity.
MEETING THE NEEDS OF CURRENT MEMBERS If you personally don’t feel the need for these facilities, remember you are part of a vibrant, family- oriented community and these
facilities will only increase the value of your home and membership.

FOUNDATION
Ethan Braunstein MD, Board Chair, Forest Highlands Foundation
In the past we had organized a junior foundation, but this no longer exists as an official entity. However, we encourage family participation with us, and 2 new initiatives come to mind. Several of the Valley high school and prep schools have community service requirements. A family recently approached the Foundation for advice about doing such a project in Flagstaff instead of Phoenix, and we are helping with consultation. I would like to encourage other students and families with a philanthropic interest in Flagstaff to work with the Foundation as well. If the funds are donated to the Foundation and then dispersed to the community, or if local advice is needed for direct benefit to selected Flagstaff charities, we are happy to help. Another initiative to involve families will be back to school backpack stuffing for kindergarteners entering Killip School. I’ve mentioned Killip to you in the past, as we’ve had a 20 year relationship with them. You’ll all be invited to stuff backpacks provided by the Foundation with water bottles, school supplies, and hand sanitizer to get the students ready for fall. We’re already planning our summer activities. There will be a thank you event for donors late in June, and we’ll have more details on this later. Also, although we haven’t officially announced the Denise Martinez Tournament, it will be in August, and there will be a few exciting surprise twists this year. Registration is already open, but of course we’ll have much more information as the season progresses.
Welcome back to Forest Highlands for the 2022 season. As the Arizona Community Foundation grant cycle occurs in the summer and the Foundation board members have scattered to warmer climes, winter has been somewhat of an off season for the Foundation in the past. I’m happy to say that this has not been the case this year, and that we have good news on both the fund raising and fund dispersing fronts. Manyof you old timers and full year residents will remember the Crown Railroad Cafe and Motel on the east side on Route 66. The model trains would run on tracks over and above the diners. The Forest Highlands Foundation is proud to have contributed $50,000 toward the purchase of the motel and restaurant by Flagstaff Shelter Services. The motel will provide additional domicile and other resources for the unhoused population of Flagstaff, and the restaurant and kitchen will provide job training for motel occupants. I don’t know if the current plans call for reopening the restaurant or just using it as a training site, but if they do reopen, I’ll be the first in line for pancakes. We also were able to help Flagstaff Family Food Center (FFFC) in the past few months with a $50,000 grant. The Center is still feeling the effects of COVID and governmental support during the crisis has been withdrawn. FFFC still has to replace the services of the Arizona National Guard in food transportation and to pay for part time help that before the pandemic was provided by volunteers. This, in conjunction with recent inflation and concurrent increase in food prices has raised costs for FFFC by 33%. We’re watching the situation and we’re in conversation with FFFC with an eye toward the possibility of another $50,000 grant in the spring.
Looking forward to another great season at Forest Highlands,
Ethan Braunstein MD Board Chair, Forest Highlands Foundation beigestein@gmail.com

MEMBER SURVEY DINING SECTION
We are continuing to share highlights from the Member Survey in the monthly VIP. This month we are featuring excerpts from Section 4 on the Dining Operation. As a quick reminder, 694 individuals responded to the survey representing 517 households or 61% of our 860 memberships. Of the total survey responses, 590 individuals completed the questions in this section and 208 provided written comments.
Satisfaction with Dining Aspects
- Members are very satisfied with most aspects of dining, both at the Meadowandat theCanyonClubhouse, in fact the ratings for dining at the two clubhouses are almost identical. Three key areas of very high member satisfaction at both locations are the staff professionalism/training, the quality of the food and the meal-to- meal consistency of the food. The only slightly-elevated dissatisfaction percentages (12% to 17%) are for the availability of outdoor dining reservations, the value of the food for the price, the menu variety and the days of operation. All ratings exceed the comparison against other clubs. Comments in this section included a desire for more outdoor seating which we are addressing at both clubhouses with additional outdoor seating areas and requests for gluten free, lighter and healthymenu options which have been incorporated into the lunch and dinner menus along with featured specials throughout the summer.
The complete survey report for this Section is available on the Member website. The report includes additional charts, graphs and the many comments received related to Dining. The June VIP will feature results related to the survey questions included in Section 5 Fitness, Aquatics & Racquets Operations.

GOLF COURSE CONDITIONS UPDATE
April 26, 2022
Welcome to the 2022 golf season. As we prepare to open two fantastic golf courses, I wanted to provide an update on the turf conditions you can expect for opening weekend and for the two to three weeks following opening. This winter's snow and ice have left some areas of both courses in less than ideal shape. Many fairways on both courses, some approaches to greens and even some greens themselves are experiencing significant winter damage. The usual shady, southern sides of the golf holes have damage that is normal and expected. Number 4 green on the Canyon has typical right side damage. The same goes for #7 on the Canyon and #2 and #10 on the Meadow. Unfortunately, the damage to #9 green on the Canyon is more than typical, and arguably is the worst we have ever seen. The entire left half of the green, most of the apron and some of the fairway is essentially dead. We have done everything we can to restore these areas: Seeding, fertilizing, covering, watering, using mulch and sand and even paint to absorb sunlight and warm the area. Sod is an option that is still being considered. As part of this recovery, we have decided to utilize a temporary green on #9 Canyon for the first few weeks of the season. We are somewhat distraught about this scenario as it hasn’t happened very often in 32 years. We are doing all we can to get the courses in great shape as quickly as possible, but it may take until middle to late May for them to be great. In late fall of 2021, we thought we had prepared the courses for winter in the best possible way. Everything seemed to go right for us and we were excited to see exceptional springtime turf conditions. So what happened? There are basically three reasons for the current issues: Ice and snow; warmer winters which include more thawing and melting than ever before; and 34 years of tree growth since the Canyon Course was first built. We did our very best to remove the ice and snow from the greens as soon as we could see that there was a potential issue. One thing is certain, climate change has caused our winter temperatures to fluctuate which results in melting, re- freezing, winter rains and conditions that are not favorable
to our Poa Annua greens. In addition to changing climate, the other major factor for our turf loss is Ponderosa Pine Tree encroachment. I estimate that 80% of our turf loss each winter and spring is directly related to the size and proximity of trees to our turf. The trees cause the snow depth to be greater, the ice to be more severe and extend the duration of snow cover (which is the real grass killer). I recognize there could be push back if we proposed cutting trees that pose a threat to turf, but I also believe there is a need to selectively thin and trim trees as we go forward, . This is something we have been doing on a small scale for some time. A Ponderosa grows between 13” to 24” each year, which means that many of the trees that lined the Canyon Course when it opened in 1989 could be 30 feet taller or more by now. Not only taller, but thicker and wider. We continuously re-evaluate our maintenance practices and experiment with different techniques to help with winter damage. This fall and winter what we did didn’t work as well as we had hoped, but we will continue to work hard and I’m certain the courses will be as expected Memorial Day weekend. We are disappointed in the current turf conditions, but you will see us working hard to elevate the courses to their usual championship quality. Thank you for your patience, and as always, should you have questions, please feel free to contact me.

The optional gratuity line will remain on the chits for those members who feel that exceptional service warrants a specific server to receive a tip that is over and above their hourly wage, however it is entirely optional and not expected."

MORE INFORMATION
This semester has a few options. We have a June Only option, a July Only option, or a June / July Option. The most beneficial and the best value is the June / July option however we offer the June Only option and July Only option just in case there are scheduling conflicts. If you sign up for a class we will assume you are signing up for both June & July. If you want to just do June Only or July Only, please email Justin to clarify. We will have 2 classes offered this season. A Short Game Class and a Full Swing Class. If you've never done Op 36 before, we highly recommend starting with the Short Game Class. The Full Swing class is for people who've done previous semesters before, and have graduated to 100 yards.

GOLF
By William Godfrey and Justin Klemballa, PGA – Director of Golf Instruction
William Godfrey: What is the origin of this teaching method?
Klemballa : This unique approach to learning the game enables adults and juniors to progress much faster than traditional instruction. By starting closer to the hole, 25 yards at the beginning, the goal is to take 36 total shots over nine holes from a set distance. Once they develop the skills to achieve 36 shots or less, they receive an Operation 36 certificate and move to the next level, 50 yards, 100, 150 and then out to 200 yards. Godfrey : How does the curriculum assist students who progress at different rates? Klemballa : Students also attend weekly golf classes on the Forest Highland’s driving range with instruction from the golf staff over the two-month program. The classes teach fundamental skills and help prepare them for their 9-hole events. Godfrey : You are listed as a Top 50 Coach on the company’s website, www.operation36.golf. Congratulations! What do you feel are some takeaways from the program?
Klemballa : I've been so grateful to be part of the program. It has really created an avenue for a lot of newer golfers to improve and progress faster in golf. Many women students have shared the small group lessons provide the instruction they need to be successful on the course. And the juniors thrive on the technology available. It helps them progress through the levels quickly. Godfrey : How do FHGC Members find out more about Operation 36 and sign up? Klemballa : Members will have an opportunity to register on May 1, 2022 for the June/July semester. There will also be a second program in August/September. Additional information is available in the April and May issues of Voice in the Pines, as well as 2022- 2023 calendar. William Godfrey is an author, golf historian and biographer. He and his wife, Wendy Huck Godfrey, became FHGC Members in May 2021.
Justin Klemballa: Operation 36 Golf was started by two golf professionals from North Carolina. Their original mission was to introduce the game to one million people. In a few short years, the program has introduced almost 80,000 adult and junior students to the game.
Godfrey : When did the program start at FHGC?
Klemballa : I started Operation 36 at Forest Highlands three years ago in the summer of 2019. This will be the 4th summer offering the program here to the Members. Forest Highlands has been one of the leading clubs across the world in introducing Operation 36. We have introduced over 200 people to the game of golf in just three summers. Godfrey : How does Operation 36 differ from the traditional method of teaching beginners?

Words fromKurt…
Hello Everyone, I hope this letter finds you doing well. I wanted to reach out to share some updates on the capital projects happening in the Recreation & Common Area Departments for 2022. One of the projects we wanted to give an update on is the Canyon Pool Remodel from 2021. Last year when we received the updated bids for the Canyon Pool remodel, they came in significantly above what was budgeted during the original plan. Many have experienced the current high prices and this being more than 3 times more caused a real issue. After being reviewed by the Recreation & Racquet Committee, Master Plan Committee, and the Board of Directors it was decided it would not be prudent to move forward with the Canyon remodel at that time. We will continue to see if we can change parts of the project and receive new bids in an attempt to get something done in the near future; however, at this time the Canyon pool will remain the same in 2022 as it was in 2021. The playgrounds at Forest Highlands are carefully designed to provide a safe setting where children can be adventurous, have fun, dream, engage in physical activity and interact with others. But even the most carefully designed playground can go from safe to suspect in a relatively short period of time due to use and environmental factors. As we looked at some of our ageing structures in 2019, specifically the parks and playground structures, we knew we needed to do some updating at the Bear Howard “Sand Castle” Park and the playground next to the Recreation Center. We started by having a National Parks and Recreation Association Certified Park Safety Inspector provide feedback and guidance on our current facilities and how we can make improvements. After inspecting the Bear Howard Park, we were hit with the bad news that the swings and the slide that we had at that facility were both out of code and needed to be removed. With safety always being our number one priority, we knew we had to change the playgrounds to be safe for the children in this community. At the Meadow Playground we added swings and new slides to the existing facility, and pour and play to the entire facility so it is currently as safe as we can make it. These changes have been a huge success since they were installed in 2020! Also in 2020, we made the necessary changes to the Bear Howard Park but felt like we need something more to get it to the level we wanted. We did an analysis on a zero depth slide and bridge that would have

connected to the castle. We were excited for this addition in 2022 but after further reviews with Play it Safe Playgrounds and the playground construction company, we were informed in February of this year that we are not able to build any additional structures in the current Playground footprint. We didn’t let this deter us; it appears that there may be some land around the current structures that we might be able to use but we are not certain until we get the land surveyed. We will be conducting a Land survey in May to determine if there is usable space that the Club owns for any new structures at the Bear Howard “Sand Castle” Park.

• Dog Park - The project involving the addition of grass to the dog park has begun and should be ready to enjoy by May 20. • Pickleball nets - The Douglass nets have been ordered and will be
available when the Season begins. • Road Maintenance - Complete
• Tennis parking area - The new asphalt has been laid in the parking area. We will continue looking at improving the area around the parking area as well. • Mailroom road widening - Complete • Meadow Pool Deck enhancement - This project will start in early May and is planned to be finished by the time the pool opens on May 27. • Spa Room Enhancements - Two new massage beds have been purchased along with a new massage chair, and they all arrived in April. In addition, we purchased some nice new decor, linens, and sheets, and we are having a new cabinet installed for additional storage. We have opened it up as much as we are able to make it feel more spacious. • Fitness Center Upgrades - As per member feedback after the 2021 re- model, we ordered a few additional pieces of equipment, and they arrived in April. These pieces include another functional trainer (cable machine), a new back extension and Concept 2 rowing machine, a preacher curl, and additional weight plates. • Fitness Classroom - As the Reformer Pilates program continues to grow, the need was apparent for a few add-ons to the machines, in addition to replacement items. These have arrived and been installed. Our spin bikes were 6 years old and also in need of replacement. These have arrived and been assembled. Members are already enjoying the upgrades to all of this great new equipment in the Flex Room.
