Dave Stearns, Board President Doug Sutter, General Manager/COO
Now that we are through the extreme heat of the summer and our welcomed monsoon rains have arrived, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the incredible summer season we’ve enjoyed so far. From all that I have seen during my first year here at Forest Highlands, it’s clear that 2024 has been a year filled with sophisticated fun and strong community spirit. In this month’s message, I am thrilled to share highlights from our vibrant summer season, commend the diligent efforts of our Board and Committees, update you on important capital projects, build excitement for our Foundation’s recent success, and once again express my deepest gratitude for your consistent participation in our events and amenities. The summer of 2024 has been nothing short of exciting and filled with memorable events. From lively holiday family barbecues to elegant wine dinners, along with enjoying superior golf course conditions to competitive points played on the newly resurfaced courts, there has been something for everyone to enjoy. I have also learned from many families, who enroll our younger members in our youth summer camp programs, that our recreation team has done a tremendous job fostering friendships between our young members and providing unique experiences for all in attendance. Thus, regardless of the members’ age, it’s been a joy to see so many smiling faces and hear the genuine laughter echoing through our beautiful paradise in the pines as we continue to bring the members of our community closer together. Our dedicated Board of Directors and Committee members deserve positive recognition and praise for their tireless efforts to enhance every aspect of our Forest Highlands community. I can say from firsthand knowledge that their commitment to continuous improvement to assure we remain a premier destination for relaxation and recreation is undivided. This is proven by their dedication to refining our amenities and policies as needed while focusing on one common goal, to simply do what is best for Forest Highlands. Both the current members of these distinguished member groups along with those who have previously served have been instrumental in creating the exceptional environment and club culture we all cherish. Transitioning into capital projects, I am pleased to report that we are in the midst of completing our 500,000-gallon potable water tank project (located on Canyon Course hole #2), a vital enhancement for our community infrastructure. This project represents our ongoing commitment to bolstering our community’s sustainability and resource management and we hope to

have it completed in the fall. Looking ahead, we are still hopeful to begin work on the 300,000-gallon effluent wastewater storage tank in late summer (located near our current wastewater treatment plant), with the goal of completing the project by late fall. Both projects were deemed high priorities from our recent water study and are crucial for maintaining the high quality of our community facilities and utility services. We are thrilled to share the tremendous success of the recent Forest Highlands Foundation Gala fundraising event which took place on Saturday, July 13th. As someone who was in the room witnessing the program, I have no doubt everyone in attendance was as inspired as I was by the remarkable amount that was raised. This event showcased the generosity and commitment of our members to making a positive impact not only within our beloved community but also for numerous initiatives and programs directly benefiting the greater Flagstaff community. Building on the momentum of the Gala, the Foundation is planning to host a “New Member” Open House in the month of August. We encourage all members who have joined the club in the last five years and may not yet be fully aware of the Foundation’s tremendous mission to attend. In closing, I want to emphasize how truly special our community is because of the pride and passion each of you brings to our community. Your enthusiasm, participation, support, and genuine appreciation create an environment for our team members to push themselves to always exceed your expectations. Here’s to celebrating the wonderful memories we’ve already made in 2024 and to the exciting times ahead as we finish our summer season and transition into fall and winter. Thank you for supporting us in making Forest Highlands so remarkable.

In Memoriam
In Memoriam We are deeply saddened to share the loss of two cherished members of our Forest Highlands community, Robert George Miskar and Leonard William Huck, who both passed away in July.
Leonard William Huck December 4, 1922 - July 7, 2024
Leonard William Huck passed away on July 7, 2024, at the age of 101. Len was one of the most impactful Presidents and Emeritus members of the Forest Highlands Foundation Board. He also served as the second President of the Forest Highlands Homeowners Association in 1995 and 1996. His contributions to our community are commemorated with a road named in his honor, which runs along the driving range leading to the Meadow Clubhouse. Leonard led a remarkable life, marked by his dedication and service. He was a treasured member of Forest Highlands, known for his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering spirit. Leonard’s legacy is one of generosity and compassion, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, and we honor his memory with profound respect.
Leonard William Huck Obituary
Robert George Miskar October 3, 1944 - July 14, 2024
Bob Miskar passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2024, after a long illness that began earlier this year. Bob was an avid golfer who played on some of the most iconic courses in Scotland, Ireland, and of course, here in the US. His passion for the game and his friendly spirit made him a beloved member of our community. There will be a celebration of Bob’s life this fall, where friends and family can gather to honor his memory. Memorial contributions in his honor can be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.

Both Bob & Len will be greatly missed, but their spirits will continue to live on within our community.

WELCOME OUR NEW MEADOW FOOD AND BEVERAGE MANAGER; MARLEY ROSSI!
Hello, Forest Highlands Members!
I’m Marley Rossi, and I’m thrilled to start my first season as the Food and Beverage Manager at the Meadow Clubhouse. While I’m new to this role, my journey with Forest Highlands started four years ago. I began as an expeditor in the Canyon kitchen in 2021, moved up to a server in 2022, and last year, I took on responsibilities as an AM supervisor, gaining valuable managerial experience. I started working in restaurants at 16 and ever since, have appreciated the dynamic pace of service, the camaraderie with colleagues, and the sense of achievement after a busy night, which is why I believe I took to Forest Highlands so quickly. Originally from Mission Viejo, California, I thought I’d always be a beach person until I moved to Flagstaff in 2018 for college. In 2022, I earned a B.A. in Anthropology with a socio-cultural emphasis from Northern Arizona University. I wasn’t sure which direction to go after school, but I was sure about my love for learning, people, and pine trees. Transitioning from anthropology to Food and Beverage management might seem unconventional, but it’s a role I’ve come to happily embrace because I’m still given the opportunity to learn new things, take creative approaches, and ultimately create a positive environment for everyone to enjoy. I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn from my more experienced colleagues and for the growth Forest Highlands continues to offer me, allowing this beautiful place to become my second home—a feeling you all understand, and one I hope to sustain. Outside of work, you can find me hanging out with my cat Flapjack, enjoying the local scenery, or crafting under a tree somewhere. Despite my focused demeanor, I’m quite friendly, so don’t hesitate to come up and say hi, whether I’m on duty or enjoying my downtime.
I’m excited about this season and am looking forward to building deeper connections with all of you.
See you around! Marley

DINING POLICIES
CANCELLATION POLICY Reservations must be canceled 24 hours in advance to avoid a per person “Cancellation Fee” of $10. Last minute cancellations prevent other members the opportunity to make a reservation when the dining room is already fully booked. Any large party reduction not done within 24 hours will also incur a per person “cancellation fee”. Parties of 6 or more often require 2 tables so a last minute reduction in party size also prevents another member from using the facilities. (Large parties are defined as 5 or more) Holiday Weekend Cancellation Policy Reservations must be canceled 48 hours in advance to help prevent last minute cancellations and dual clubhouse reservations. Any cancellation less than 48 hours will be charged a $20 person cancellation fee. This will give F&B a better opportunity to reach full dining capacity during the holiday weekend. FOREST HIGHLANDS DINING OPTIONAL GRATUITY POLICY There are no service charge fees on food and beverage purchases in any of our food outlets. The service staff is paid a sufficient hourly rate that does not require being supplemented by additional gratuities. The optional gratuity line will remain on the chits for those members who feel that exceptional service warrants a specific server to receive a tip that is over and above their hourly wage, however it is entirely optional and not expected.
CONTINUE TO MAKE RESERVATIONS AT THE CLUB Log on to members.fhgc.com to make dining reservations & register for events, or call the Club Dining reservations can ONLY be made one week in advance. Grand Prize 2019 Daou Patrimony - $500 - THE PATRIMONY COLLECTION
The fruit grown on the PATRIMONY Estate produces unfathomably high phenolics, the natural compounds responsible for the composition and marriage of color, taste and texture. This fruit is masterfully guided by Daniel Daou’s palate as well as his proprietary fermentation techniques. He relies on native yeasts cultured from DAOU Mountain, which create pure wines that never rely on acidification or other adulterations. All of this enables PATRIMONY to achieve what some might consider impossible: wines of immense power and longevity without any sacrifice of elegance, freshness or balance.

FOUNDATION
Those of you who participated in the Denise Martinez Tournament or the 25th Anniversary Gala will know that this has been a busy month for the Forest Highlands Foundation. Both events were tremendously successful, and we would like to thank Vickie Selzer and her volunteers for their customary fine job organizing the golf tournament, and Phyllis Banucci, Michelle Arena and their team for planning the most successful Gala/ Bearfoot event in our history. Paul Paparella, our emcee for the Gala, provided commentary and magic tricks for the occasion. We also would like to thank Will Godfrey for his capsule history of the Foundation to be found in the program, and we look forward to reading the complete version of our history at a later date.
As all this was happening, the grant committee, led by Wendy Godfrey with the help of Paul Paparella, participated in the “horse trading” event of the Arizona Community Foundation Flagstaff. While some of us were busy raising money for the Foundation, the grant committee gave away more than $280,000 at horse trading. As the total for all local foundations was $1,500,000, you can see the outsized influence that our foundation has in local human services philanthropy. In fact, we contributed an amount greater than $100,000 more than any other local donor. We of course will have the official numbers in our annual report. Along with contributions to our usual donees, we also look for small promising organizations just

beginning their work in the community, and we give them small starter grants. We then review their performance at the next grant cycle to determine if they merit further support. In this way we hope to encourage smaller nonprofit organizations in Flagstaff. As I have mentioned in the past, we are the only private club in Northern Arizona with such a philanthropic profile, a fact frequently noticed and commented on in the local philanthropic community.
we are the only private club in Northern Arizona with such a philanthropic profile...
Amid all this activity, we had time to make a site visit to Jojo’s Place, a project developed by Housing Solutions of Northern Arizona. HSNA parlayed a starter grant of $50,000 from the Forest Highlands Foundation into an additional 8.9 million dollars of government funding to purchase a rundown motel on Route 66 and refurbish it into transitional housing for 44 individuals or families while HSNA attempts to arrange permanent housing for them. Occupants already have begun to move into this facility.
Finally, I regret to report that Len Huck passed away at the age of 101. Len had been Chair of the Forest Highlands Foundation 20 years ago, and perhaps he was more responsible than anyone else for the integration of the Foundation into the already existing philanthropic community of Flagstaff so that all of our efforts could be more efficiently coordinated. Len was a person of great integrity and compassion, and he will be sorely missed. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family.
As usual, if you have any questions about the Foundation, or if you would like to volunteer for our board or any of our activities, please contact me at beigestein@gmail.com or our Chairman, MarcusSipolt; msipolt@blindsidesbc.com
Thank you. Ethan Braunstein, Past Chair, Forest Highlands Foundation
Thank you for joining us in our mission to uplift our community! Every donation, big or small, fuels our efforts to create positive change and spread hope.

Canyon Course’s Lowest Round Ever RYAN SMITH, PGA POSTED A 61 ON A MONSOON-FILLED AFTERNOON
By William Godfrey Forest Highlands Club Historian
On a soggy, rain-drenched afternoon 10 years ago, Ryan Smith and his playing companions waited out an August monsoon at Forest Highlands.Their patience was rewarded with a golf round for the ages. Smith, then 26, a former FHGC assistant professional, shot the best official round ever recorded on the Canyon course on August 11, 2014. Currently, the Director of Golf at Glacier Golf Club in Durango, Colorado, Ryan, shared that special day and how he got started in the game. William Godfrey: How were you introduced to golf? Ryan Smith: I was introduced to golf through my family. Everyone played. My dad and my two older brothers were all avid golfers. My mom played nine holes from time to time. My grandfather, on mom’s side, is in the North Dakota Golf Hall of Fame. Golf was a big part of my childhood. My brothers and I worked at the Collindale Golf Course in Fort Collins, Colorado, where we grew up. We did everything from being the cart kid to mowing fairways and cooking chicken fingers on the grill. I would get dropped off in the mornings as a kid and get picked up before dinner. It was like daycare! Godfrey: How did you first learn about Forest Highlands? Smith: I graduated from UNLV’s PGA Golf Management program in 2010. I was looking to start my career in golf. Growing up in Colorado I always wanted to work in the mountains and when I saw the Forest Highlands job posting, I thought it would be a great fit.
Some of my fondest memories include working with great people at FHGC: Matt Bailey, Eric Slack, Josh White and Steven Mauser (among others) were a big part of my almost 10 years at the Club and they are still close friends. Playing after work with staff and club members was a highlight and the golf courses are so good. Godfrey: What do you recall about that special round? Smith: It was a very stormy day. We were planning to tee off late morning but the lightning horn went off multiple times. So, we ended up teeing off hole #10 around 1:00 pm. The golf course was wet from the rain, so it played very soft. The group was three golf industry professionals from the Phoenix area. Because of the delays, we didn’t have much time to warm up before heading out. I started with a great shot on the10th hole to three feet, but the putt lipped out. So, I tapped in for a par. The round continued slowly as I also parred 11 and 12. Made my first birdie on #13, then parred 14. Then the fireworks started! I went on a crazy string of birdies: 15, 16, 17, 18, 1 and 2. Six in a row, highlighted by driving the 17th green and two-putting for birdie. I parred 4, then birdied 5 and 6. So now I was nine-under par with three to play. It was starting to get real…the guys I was playing with were great. They didn’t make much of what was happening. But, come to find out later, they were talking to a lot of people through text messages, letting them know something crazy was happening.

GOLF
We got to the 7th hole, and I hit a great drive in the fairway that left me with only a 9-iron. I hit my first poor shot of the day, hit it heavy and left it 30 yards short. Then, I hit my chip shot a bit thin, but the ball hit the flagstick. It dropped in the hole for birdie! Sometimes you have to be lucky to be good. I guess the ball would have been at least 15 feet past the hole if it didn’t hit the stick. I ended with pars on 8 and 9 to cap off the (-10), 61! It was such a fun day and one that will most likely never happen again. Ten birdies and no bogeys. One of Ryan Smith’s playing companions during his years at Forest Highlands was Eric Slack, PGA. Slack was hired as Head Professional in 2006 and his career at FHGC spanned eight years. “I probably played more golf at Forest Highlands with Ryan than anyone. We always had a great time playing together,” shared Slack in a phone conversation from Fayetteville, Arkansas. “Ryan had the innate ability to overpower a golf course, but he also had a great course demeanor. He never got too high or too low when we played. He is a tall, athletic guy who is a lefty. He was a hockey player, so that sport helped him generate speed and horsepower with his golf clubs,” Eric explained. “Ryan was a streaky player who could hit it close and often made a lot of putts. “ Today, Ryan Smith resides in Durango with his wife and five-month-old daughter. He doesn’t have any other course records currently. He has had a few rounds in the 60’s including his low round of 66 at the Glacier Club. Smith’s record round is commemorated with a square wooden plaque with a large ‘61’ and the August date etched in wood. It is on the wall in the Canyon pro shop. Smith reflected on his achievement now a decade ago, “Looking back…that round was a bit of an outlier. I got on a heater and a lot of putts went in. The stars were aligned that afternoon.”
