Mike Cahill, Board President Patty Ashbrook, General Manager / COO The smell of wet grass and pine trees following a monsoon rain, the sound of kids laughter playing at Lawn Games, the taste of BBQ ribs from Smokey in the Pines…these are some of the things I have enjoyed so far this summer! It is hard to believe August has already arrived and we have officially hit the midway point of our summer season. June and July have been some of the busiest months in Forest Highlands’ history. While rounds of golf have returned to pre-pandemic levels, dining usage is up from last year, attendance at our special events and tournaments are at or above record numbers, and usage of tennis, concierge, and recreation programs is at an all-time high. All in all, 2022 is shaping up to be one of the most active summers we have ever experienced. As many of our families prepare to return to the valley for the beginning of another school year, we want to thank you for participating in our programs and we’ll look forward to seeing you on the weekends! August has many great events and activities so be sure to check out this issue for important details. As we head into August we begin to look forward already to next year. Forest Highlands’ fiscal year is the calendar year ending December 31, so we will now begin working on the projections for the end of 2022 to see how closely our budget matched up with actual results and use that information to start our 2023 budget preparations and planning. We will provide an update on our strong financial position for both the operations and our Capital and Reserve funds at the upcoming Member Town Hall on Saturday, September 3. The Town Hall is also your opportunity to meet the candidates running for the 4 open positions on the Board of Directors. Attendance is encouraged or you can view a recording of the meeting afterward as we will not have a livestream option. If you are interested in running for the Board, please be sure to sign up for the next Candidate Orientation session on Saturday, August 13. All candidates are required to attend an orientation session to be on the ballot.
We have recently lifted the mandatory staff mask policy now that we have the majority of our staff healthy again but it is important to note that we continue to be aware of positive Covid cases within the membership as well as staff. We will be monitoring the health of our staff and will make decisions as required to ensure we can continue to provide services with minimal disruption as we head into the second half of the summer. I want to take this opportunity to highlight some of our amazing staff! Whenever an employee goes above and beyond by displaying exemplary performance or has made a significant contribution to their team in providing the “Forest Highlands Experience,” their co-workers have an opportunity to nominate them for our Employee of the Month award. There were 3 employees who received the Employee of the Month for May and two for June. July Employees of the Month will be nominated this week. When you see these employees, please be sure to give them well-deserved congratulations and thank them for their exemplary efforts!

We have begun to see a noticeable decline in the number of vehicles speeding throughout the community. Thank you to all for your diligence! A quick reminder now that our monsoon moisture has arrived: Please remember to exhibit your Pride of Ownership by trimming weeds and grasses on your property to below knee height and removing invasive weed species. types of weeds that are harmful to our native plants and that should be removed from your yards.
Civility means a great deal more than just being nice to one another. It is complex and encompasses learning how to connect successfully and live well with others, developing thoughtfulness, and fostering effective self-expression and communication. Civility includes courtesy, politeness, mutual respect, fairness, good manners, as well as a matter of good health.
At the Regular Board meeting held on July 25, the board discussed a recent incident of vandalism to a poster at the mailroom that featured a group of children promoting a Recreation program. The vandalism appeared to be intentional to one specific child as none of the faces of the other children were damaged. This type of malicious behavior will not be tolerated and the board is extremely disappointed that someone within our community would act in this manner. The Forest Highlands Association Board of Directors is committed to providing a workplace and community that embraces and encourages the concepts of diversity, equity and inclusion for every person. We welcome and value the unique perspective and experience that every person brings. Cultivating a culture based on kindness, respect and civility is essential to the continued success and growth of Forest Highlands and we expect all Members, family and guests to behave accordingly. As a final thought, thank you to all those members who have contacted me or members of the Board with your compliments and constructive criticism regarding our operations. The objective of the Board and every staff person is to make Forest Highlands the best it can be. Without your input it is impossible to know what is working well and what could be improved. So please, continue to provide feedback, it is the lifeblood of our continued success!

What makes a weed, a weed? Typically a weed is defined as any plant growing where it is not wanted but more information may help you understand the importance in mitigating invasive species because of the negative impact they pose on the surrounding environment. Aggressive and persistent species can quickly take over and outnumber native species reducing diversity and wildlife habitat.
GOT WEEDS? The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension, Coconino County, and the Flagstaff chapter of the
Arizona Native Plant Society has created a website (https://nazinvasiveplants.org/) to provide facts and photos that will help residents of northern Arizona identify and control the invasive plants most likely to be found in their yards and neighborhoods. There are fact sheets to help you identify invasive plants on your property or in your neighborhood, understand why they are weedy and troublesome, and learn about methods for controlling them on properties up to 2 or 3 acres in size. Note that larger properties may require different control methods and the assistance of professionals. In the Resources section of the site, you will find general information about eradicating invasive plants in your yard, your neighborhood, and the wider community. You will also find a glossary and additional references to help you learn more about invasive plants. It is our hope that this website will help you join the growing team of "weed warriors" in northern Arizona and within our Forest Highlands community.

HIGH WATER BILL?
Things to look for when you see an increase in your water bill… Leaks in your irrigation system (especially automatic ones) are typically the first culprit to look for when usage seems higher than usual. If a landscaping company does work to your landscaping 1. Ensure you have approval through the Design Review Committee before any plantings or earth moving. 2. Ensure that the company checks the irrigation system is operational before use. The Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) is the regulatory authority with jurisdiction over private water and wastewater companies including Forest Highlands. The ACC dictates that service may be refused because of outstanding water usage charges.
Other potential Causes of high water usage: • Irrigation system leaks- valves can get stuck open, lines can freeze over winter and crack when turned back on in the spring • Plumbing leaks • Running toilets, leaking faucets • Water heaters/water softeners- recirculation pumps getting stuck on, leaking valves, etc. • Hose bibs getting left open by accident
When returning for the season it’s important to ensure irrigation and plumbing lines are all functioning properly. Winterizing homes that won’t be visited during the off season is a good way to avoid possible leaks. When irrigation is turned back on in the spring it’s important to do a full check of the system, especially if system is automated and the homeowner is not checking daily for puddles or signs of leaks. Also, if members are leaving for periods at a time it doesn’t hurt to go around the homes and double check to make sure there are no running faucets or toilets. Small leaks can add up in gallons very quickly.

Please note the brand-new Hazardous Waste Collection event scheduled for Labor Day Weekend: Saturday, September 3 from 9AM – 3PM Behind the fire station. This event is for Members only and Forest Highlands household waste only. Contractors are prohibited from using the community dumpsters at any time. If homes are undergoing construction, it is the responsibility of the homeowner and contractor to manage and remove all construction waste. Violators of this policy are subject to referral to the Board and potential fines. Pine Needle Pick-Up Bagged pine needles are picked up every Tuesday during the regular season (May 1st – October 31st). On the rare occasion that there are too many bags to be picked up on Tuesday’s, Waste management will return the following day to collect the rest. During the off-season (November 1st – April 30th) pine needle bags are picked up on only the first Tuesday of every month. Pine needles need to be bagged up and put out by the street as near as possible to the homeowner’s address post so Waste Management can be sure the correct address is getting charged for the pick-up.
If the member is still in the process of bagging or the bags are not by the side of the road Waste Management will skip it and come back to it the following week. The charge per bag is $3.75, and the total charge per pick-up shows up as a line item on the member’s monthly account statement. If a member has bags sitting by the edge of the road on a Tuesday, Waste Management will pick it up and the member will be charged, so if you don’t want to be charged don’t leave bags by the road.

Violations of the leash rule/law could lead to a Forest Highlands fine and on a more significant level, Coconino County Animal Control could site dog owners and a much larger fine would be possible. Aside from fines, PLEASE help keep the community safe by keeping dogs on a leash, to include when walking your dog on the golf course cart paths. REMINDER, dogs are not allowed on the golf courses, they are to remain on the cart paths. It goes without saying, but please clean up after your dog.

FOUNDATION
Ethan Braunstein MD, Board Chair, Forest Highlands Foundation
Our feedback from these directors was that they were impressed by the penetrating questions and with the level of interest in their activities from our donors. We thank all of the volunteers for your participation and we hope to make this also an annual event. Our July meeting featured a presentation by Kathy Simmons, Director of Northland Hospice. Although there are five hospices in Flagstaff, Northland is the only one that is not for profit, and the Foundation has been a long tome supporter. In fact, it is only a slight exaggeration to say that, if it weren’t for the Hospice, there might not have been a Foundation. The Foundation was started 22 years ago, and it provided funding to support the Olivia White House at the Hospice. This facility was named after the relative of a Forest Highlands member who required care at the Hospice, and Olivia White House was built with funding from the Foundation. Olivia White House provides inpatient end of life care. The Hospice, being nonprofit, is available to anyone in the community who needs such care regardless of financial resources. Currently, about 40% of the patients are Native American. Today’s Foundation is proud to continue our traditional relationship with Northland Hospice. We’ll be back next month with further information about the Foundation’s activities. In the meantime, don’t forget to sign up for the Denise Martinez Memorial Golf Tournament.
As Forest Highlands is now in the midst of the summer season, the Foundation is entering its busiest time of the year. We have just completed our “horse trading”event with the Arizona Community Foundation, in which all the local charitable foundations gather to distribute funds to the nonprofits that have applied for grants. We’re happy to report that the meeting was very successful. We’ll have more information for you in next month’s column. I’ve mentioned Killip School in previous columns. Killip is a Title 1elementary school in Sunnyside, a disadvantaged neighborhood on the east side of Flagstaff, and nearly all of the students there are on the federal lunch program. Under the leadership of Ed Lesser and Jean Brown, the Foundation has provided backpacks and school supplies for all of the incoming kindergartners. We had a “backpack stuffing event” in which Foundation members and volunteers from the Forest Highlands community, well, stuffed backpacks with the supplies. The backpacks and supplies will be distributed to the children at the beginning of the school year. We hope that this will become an annual event.
We thank all of the volunteers ...
Some of you may have participated in our donor appreciation event at the Canyon Clubhouse. This party was a chance to thank all of our loyal donors and to have them interact with board members and the directors of some of the local organizations that we support.

AUG/SEPT. FLYER
Operation 36 is for Beginners to Advanced players including Men, Women, Couples, Juniors (Ages 7 & up) and Future 36ers (Ages 4 - 6). This semester has a few options. We have an August Only option, a September Only option, or an August / September option. The most beneficial and the best value is the August / September option however we offer the August Only option and September Only option just in case there are scheduling conflicts. If you sign up for a class we will assume you are signing up for both August & September. If you want to just do August Only or September Only, please email Justin to clarify; jklemballa@fhgc.com

FITNESS AND SPA FITNESS
CHILDREN/TEEN POLICY No children under 10 years of age are permitted in the fitness center. Children aged 10-12 must be under direct supervision and may only use the cardio equipment, bands, balls, light weights, and stretching area. No heavy weights. NEW Teen Policy in the Fitness Center To ensure that our teens are using the equipment safely, individuals aged 13-16 years old must attend a free 30 min fitness center orientation with a personal trainer. Teens can drop in to any orientation scheduled on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 10:30am. We will be keeping track of who has done the orientation, using a list and a wristband system. To learn more click here to listen to the FH Podcast.
