HIGH WATER BILL?
Things to look for when you see an increase in your water bill… Leaks in your irrigation system (especially automatic ones) are typically the first culprit to look for when usage seems higher than usual. If a landscaping company does work to your landscaping 1. Ensure you have approval through the Design Review Committee before any plantings or earth moving. 2. Ensure that the company checks the irrigation system is operational before use. The Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) is the regulatory authority with jurisdiction over private water and wastewater companies including Forest Highlands. The ACC dictates that service may be refused because of outstanding water usage charges.
Other potential Causes of high water usage: • Irrigation system leaks- valves can get stuck open, lines can freeze over winter and crack when turned back on in the spring • Plumbing leaks • Running toilets, leaking faucets • Water heaters/water softeners- recirculation pumps getting stuck on, leaking valves, etc. • Hose bibs getting left open by accident
When returning for the season it’s important to ensure irrigation and plumbing lines are all functioning properly. Winterizing homes that won’t be visited during the off season is a good way to avoid possible leaks. When irrigation is turned back on in the spring it’s important to do a full check of the system, especially if system is automated and the homeowner is not checking daily for puddles or signs of leaks. Also, if members are leaving for periods at a time it doesn’t hurt to go around the homes and double check to make sure there are no running faucets or toilets. Small leaks can add up in gallons very quickly.
