MEMBERS SHOW CONCERN FOR E-BIKE/E-SCOOTER SAFETY
Typically, Forest Highlands is a highly diverse community with wide ranging views. But when it comes to the safe operation of e-bikes and e-scooters on property it appears there is strong agreement. With a total of 256 responses to the Security Department survey in May, the members of Forest Highlands showed profound concern about the issue. Among those responses, 82% indicated they were “concerned” or “very concerned” about the safe operation of e-bikes/scooters, while less than 10% of respondents indicated they were “not concerned”. Comments from the survey respondents cited all sorts of unsafe e-bike/e- scooter operation and called for stronger enforcement from Forest Highlands security officers. This level of response is unprecedented compared to prior surveys and has garnered serious attention from the Forest Highlands’ leadership team and members of the Board. Members of Forest Highlands’ Security and Safety Committee are currently developing new rules to address e-bike/e- scooter safety. In the meantime, members, parents and children would do well to know what laws are already in place regarding e-bikes and e-scooters. Arizona law permits e-bike/e-scooter riders the same rights and responsibilities as motorists. They must obey the rules of the road, obey all signs, signals and lane markings, and ride on the right side of the road. There must be one seat for each rider, and speeding, weaving, tailing, and wheelies are not allowed.
