INFORMATIVE VIDEOS ABOUT WILDFIRES & COMMUNITY SAFETY

Below are three links to informative videos, with two of them less than five minutes. Everyone is encouraged to watch all three videos, even the 13 minute video. They provide tips from professionals and comments from people that have been impacted by wildfires. Some of the tips are simple and could be vital to a home not catching on fire; i.e. removing all pine needles within 5’ of a structure, remove the needles from gutters and on the roof. Although not simple to replace, wood roofs are known to be a big contributor to a home catching on fire if wildfire embers land on any roof, but significantly more dangerous if the roof is wood and there is a collection of pine needles.

DURANGO, COLORADO SUCCESS STORY

CHOICES THAT CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

YOUR HOME CAN SURVIVE A WILDFIRE

Common Area Annual Action Zones The Firewise Committee in coordination with Highlands Fire District personnel and Forest Highlands staff have developed an initiative to supplement and complement the ongoing annual homeowner Firewise program. This initiative will provide a planned and reasonable approach to improving the health and fire safety of our common areas and improve the health of the golf courses and enable quicker recovery of the current shady areas in the spring. Forest Highlands is committed to addressing the topic of Firewise for our entire community and not just private parcels. The Common Areas within the community have been divided into 10 Action Zones. Objectives include thinning trees 9” and under (retaining such trees for age diversity, aesthetics, buffer, etc.) to allow more nutrients to be absorbed by larger trees, trees with disease or malformed tops/canopies will be removed before healthy trees, and cut materials will be piled for burning in winter. Work will be coordinated with Highlands Fire Bear Jaw wildland crew and will be conducted in the shoulder months of the season and in the winter, weather permitting. Members will be notified of work to be performed in each Zone via the Voice and by email. It is the intent to begin with Zone 1 in late Fall 2022. Exact timing is dependent on the availability of the Bear Jaw crew. COMMON AREA MAP
