LEADERSHIP
Mike Cahill, Board President Patty Ashbrook, General Manager / COO The month of May and the start of the summer season were noticeably quieter than what we have experienced the past couple of years. Early indications would seem that use of the club may be returning to a pre-pandemic pattern, although the winds and cooler weather we experienced in the first half of the month were a very good reason to stay in the Valley! Thankfully the winds have diminished and temperatures are heading toward that perfect summertime range we enjoy here in the high country. The warmer weather along with lots of fertilizer, grass seed, water and diligent encouragement from Bill Abbey and the course maintenance team has helped both courses come a long way in repairing the winter damage. Playing conditions on both courses are now much improved and will be terrific with a couple more weeks of warm weather. We have had a couple of important staff changes over the past month. In late April our CFO Ryan Oldroyd accepted a position as the CFO of Arizona Country Club. In finding his replacement it was very important to us to find a local candidate who was familiar with Flagstaff and had an extensive hospitality and well-rounded accounting background. It is with great pleasure that I introduce our new CFO Kim Rushing. Kim is local to Flagstaff and joins us from Continental Country Club, a non-profit homeowner’s association, where she oversaw 2,400 property owners and the golf course operation. She was previously the Controller for Xanterra Parks and Resorts with oversight of all financial functions for the Grand Canyon Railway & Hotel, the Petrified Forest, and the Grand Canyon South Rim Lodges. Kim has over 20 years of experience in financial accounting, including month-end processing, cash management, account and intercompany reconciliation, processing/overseeing payables and receivables, annual audits, operating and capital budget preparation and supervision of accounting staff. We are fortunate to have her wealth of experience and I know she looks forward to the opportunity to meet all of you! It also my pleasure to announce that this past month Kurt Martin was granted the title of Assistant General Manager. Kurt has been with Forest Highlands for the past 20 years
and was given additional oversight responsibilities in 2019 when his title was expanded to Director of Recreation & Community Services. The current organization chart and hierarchy will not change as he will continue to provide the same oversight role as exists currently for the recreation, fitness/wellness, aquatics, concierge, racquets, common area and facility maintenance, and the utility operations departments. As AGM Kurt will fill the role of acting GM when I may be absent from the Club. He will continue to regularly attend the Recreation & Racquet, Firewise and Master Plan committee meetings as this enables Kurt to have a good understanding of the future needs of the community, and he will become involved in the new Utility Operations committee as well as attending Board and Finance committee meetings. We are very pleased to be able to provide this opportunity for continued professional growth for Kurt and continuity for the community. This past week has been a busy one with the May Board meeting on the 23rd, the first Coffee with the GM on the 26th, the Annual Member Meeting on the 28th and the Memorial Day BBQ on the 29th! As communicated in the Special Meeting Notice email sent May 24, the Board approved ending the CC&R Plat Amendment Vote on Thursday, May 26 at 1PM as we had received more than the 574 affirmative votes needed to pass the plat amendment. The official tally was 615 votes in favor with 83 opposed. A total of 698 votes were cast representing 81% of all eligible members. As the Plat Amendment has been overwhelmingly approved by the membership, the next step is to submit it to Coconino County to process the amended plat. A Coconino County Board of Supervisor’s Hearing will be required with the proposed plat being on the consent agenda. Once approved by the County, the amended final plat will be recorded after it is signed by all the required parties. Simultaneously with the plat submittal to the County, we will begin working with our facility architect, multiple consultants including a sound engineer, traffic safety engineer, and landscape architect, and our contractor to create the conceptual drawings and construction documents for the project. We will continue to keep you updated on this process as we expect it will take the majority of the summer and fall before we will be ready to break ground. continued on next page > > >

If you were unable to attend the Annual Meeting, the annual report that was presented is available for your review on the member website. Unfortunately we experienced technical difficulties with the recording so in the near future we will release a podcast with a recap of the meeting discussion. In addition to a review of the financial results for 2021 and year-to-date through April 30, 2022, one of the main highlights of the meeting was an update on capital projects that have been completed in 2022, those still pending and those currently under consideration in the next 1-5 years. The Memorial Day BBQ was well attended with approximately 850 members, family and guests. The weather was nearly a bit cooler and windier than hoped with even a drop or two of rain, however the food was outstanding, and the games and music were a hit. It was truly an exceptional way to kick off the summer! Other exciting things to look forward to in June include the Couples Invitational and the Member-Member, the Taste of Forest Highlands wine and food festival, Daou Wine Dinner, shuttle service to the Flagstaff Farmer’s Market downtown, Family Movie in the Park, Callaghan Soccer Camps for the kids, and of course celebrating all the Dad’s on Father’s Day! “Here’s to all the Dads, the Step-Dads, the Foster Dads, the Solo Dads, the Dads to Be, the Should Be Dads, the Moms that are also Dads, and those without Dads – Thank you for all you do!”

FOUNDATION
Ethan Braunstein MD, Board Chair, Forest Highlands Foundation
partners with whom we have a long standing relationship, such as Flagstaff Shelter Services, Flagstaff Family Food Center, and Housing Solutions/Sharon Manor This will give us more agility in handling rapidly occurring community crises such as COVID, wildfire, flood, and as we’ve all noticed recently, the effect of inflation on local food supplies. This process at some point may necessitate some sort of formal separation of Foundation funds between those monies earmarked for Community Foundation distribution and contingency funds earmarked for direct grants by the Foundation to our human services nonprofits. In other Foundation news, plans for the Denise Martinez Memorial Tournament continue apace. The theme, as you’re already noticed, is rock ’n roll, and one of Alice Cooper’s autographed guitars will be auctioned at the event. Also, we’re happy to see that the Forest Highlands Youth Leadership Council has been organized, and we look forward to working with them on a backpack project for Killip School as well as many other projects in the future. Jean Brown will be our liaison with the Youth Leadership Council. Finally please keep in mind our donor thank you event on June 25. This has been sponsored by an anonymous Foundation member, so no Foundation money will be expended. I’ll be back with another update next month. As usual, if you have any questions about the Foundation, please contact me <beigestein@gmail.com> or any of the other Board members.
May marked the opening of the new Flagstaff Shelter Services (FSS) facility at the old Crown (Howard Johnson’s) motel on east Route 66. The housewarming was celebrated by FSS, local politicians, and representatives of local Flagstaff nonprofits. Several members of the Foundation Board were in attendance. By the time of the housewarming, 12 individuals or families were already living in the new transitional housing, with space for 46 more. There will be onsite services including North Country Health Care, the Guidance Center, Southwest Behavioral Health Services, and the Flagstaff Family Food Center. The project and motel renovation cost $6.19 million, paid for by the Arizona Department of Housing, The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation, and, of course, the Forest Highlands Foundation. The Crown Railroad Cafe (a Flagstaff institution) was also very generous with support. FHF provided the initial $50,000 in seed money, and this was leveraged into the entire $6.19 million cost of the entire project, so the FHF’s ability to be in the right place at the right time was instrumental in assuring that it all happened. This marks a bit of change from our normal funding process. In the past, about 95% of our funding of local nonprofits came through a collaborative process with the Arizona Community Foundation Flagstaff and other local foundations. This served the purpose of coordinating funding with other groups, but the emergence of COVID necessitated an approach that would get the funds to where they’re needed more expeditiously. We have recently concentrated on directly evaluating requests for funding by our partners, and over the past 2 years we have distributed about $200,000 without going through the Community Foundation. Therefore, only about 75% of grant money has been distributed though the Community Foundation in the last 2 years. In the future, although we will continue to work extensively with the Arizona Community Foundation, we anticipate expanding our outreach to those

COCONINO NATIONAL FOREST UNDER STAGE 2 FIRE RESTRICTIONS
View the official Stage 2 Forest Order here
Due to warmer weather conditions, increased fire danger, and for public safety, Coconino National Forest implemented Stage 2 fire restrictions Thursday, May 26. The forest has been under Stage 1 fire restrictions since May 5, which prohibit campfires across the forest and limits them to developed recreations sites only. However, with warmer and windy weather, as well as key criteria being met, stricter fire restrictions will be implemented across the entire national forest--including developed recreation sites.
Stage 2 fire restrictions prohibit the following:
• Building, maintaining, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire, including charcoal, coal, and briquettes. This includes smudge pots and wood stoves. The only exception is using a stove or grill that is solely fueled by pressurized liquid petroleum or pressurized liquid petroleum gas (LPG) fuels.). • Smoking (except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area at
least 3 feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of any flammable material). • Blasting, welding, or operating any acetylene or other torch with an open flame.
• During the hours of 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., operating a generator, chainsaw or other equipment powered by an internal combustion engine for felling, bucking, skidding, processing, road building and woodcutting during industrial operations or firewood gathering capable of igniting a fire. An exception is allowed for operating generators with an approved spark arrestor in an area barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within 3 feet of the generator. • Visitors should use caution and keep from driving over areas of vegetation to place their trailers or to unload their tents and camping supplies. This is to keep catalytic converters and other sources of heat underneath the vehicle from igniting vegetation. Additionally, fireworks of any kind are NEVER allowed on national forests.
Fire restrictions will remain in place until the forest receives significant precipitation or until Aug. 31. Violation of the restrictions on national forests is punishable by a fine of up to $5,000, imprisonment up to six months, or both.

MEMBERSHIP SURVEY REPORT #5 Click here
MEMBER SURVEY SECTION V – FITNESS, RACQUETS & AQUATICS
We are nearing the conclusion of the monthly reviews of the Member Survey responses. This month features highlights from Section 5 that covered activities in the fitness, spa, racquets, and aquatic areas of the Club. In July, we will review the final Section 6 covering feedback on Potential Future Improvements. As a quick reminder, the Member Survey had been sent out to all primary and spouse memberships on November 4, 2021 and responses were collected through December 1, 2021. A total of 694 individuals responded to the survey representing 517 households or 61% of our 860 memberships. Fitness & Spa Operations - Participation in each of the activity areas varied with the greatest number of respondents participating in use of the fitness facilities (74%) to the least number participating in tennis (21%). Members are very satisfied with the fitness facilities and operations. Almost all of the fitness ratings are 4.0 or higher, with high satisfaction percentages. Eighty-four percent (84%) of respondents are satisfied with the size of the fitness facility and 88% are satisfied with its appearance. All of the fitness satisfaction ratings are above or equal to the average ratings from other clubs, and none are below the private club industry benchmarks. Tennis & Pickleball Operations - While members are well satisfied with the condition of the courts and the tennis programs, one in four are dissatisfied with the availability of courts. There is also significant member dissatisfaction with all aspects of the Pro Shop (25% to 35% dissatisfied). All aspects of Pickleball received low ratings. The lowest rating, with most respondents dissatisfied, is for the availability of Pickleball courts.
Canyon & Meadow Pools – All of the satisfaction ratings for the Meadow and Canyon Pools are close to the average ratings from other clubs. In general, the ratings for the Canyon Pool are lower than the corresponding ratings for the Meadow Pool. For example, 83% of respondents are satisfied with the overall appearance of the Meadow Pool and only 4% are dissatisfied, compared to 69% and 11%, respectively, for the Canyon Pool.
VOICE IN THE PINES | JUNE 2022 8
CLUB NEWS
A total of 132 comments were made regarding this section with a significant number requesting a hot tub at the Canyon pool and additional Pickleball courts. The Canyon pool renovation planned for 2021 included the addition of a hot tub but was postponed due to bid estimates coming in 300% greater than what had been budgeted. This enhancement is still under consideration and will become a greater priority in 2023. Several comments requested that the Canyon pool be designated as “adult only.” Unlike a country club, a homeowner association is legally not permitted to impose age restrictions on use of Club facilities unless there is a danger related to their use by a specific age group. Therefore we cannot restrict use of the Canyon pool by families.
The complete survey report for this Section is available on the Member website. The report includes additional charts, graphs and the many comments received related to the Fitness, Aquatics & Racquets Operations. Be sure to watch for the July VIP which will feature the final Section 6- Potential Future Improveme nts.
In order to provide additional parking spaces in the Canyon parking lot we have created dedicated spaces for smaller vehicles such as UTV’s and NEV’s. These spaces are narrower than regular parking spaces so we encourage regular size cars and trucks to leave these spaces for these smaller alternative vehicles. The narrower spaces are located in the first two “bays” on the left hand side of the lot. NEV PARKING SPACES at CANYON

GOLF
THE PROCESS OF MAKING A FULL SWING CHANGE WITH VIDEO INSTRUCTION Everyone typically is looking for improvement with their full swing in golf. They either want to make solid contact more consistently, have better direction control with their ball flight, or have the desire to hit the ball farther distances. Whatever it may be there is a necessary process that needs to be followed in order to achieve improvement. I learned this process from my most influential mentor in golf named, Jim McLean. This process involves answering 3 important questions, and these 3 questions will be answered for every golf student that comes to visit me on the backside of the Meadow Driving Range for a lesson this summer. These 3 very important questions are:
1) What are you doing right now?
2) What should you be doing instead?
3) How do you make that change?
These 3 questions are the most important because it lays the foundation of what you will be spending your time on in practice. The first question "What are you doing right now?" is such an important one, because I've had so many students think they know what they are doing, however, when they come to the lesson tee they are doing the opposite of what they think they are doing. Students struggle to realize what they are actually doing right now, which complicates the improvement process because they don't know where to go because they don't truly know where they're coming from. That is why this summer I am bringing an incredibly important tool to the lesson tee with me, and that is the use of VIDEO INSTRUCTION!!! Video allows me to bring the student to my point of view of the lesson and let them see what I'm seeing. By having the student realize where they are right now, it is easier for the student and me to identify what they need to do instead. Once we identify what they need to do instead, we can then identify how to make the change. This summer, if you haven't yet identified that first crucial question in your swing of "what you are doing right now?", I would highly recommend coming to see me for a lesson. Every lesson this summer will involve video analysis and creating a 3 step process to help you reach your golf goals. Take time today to call the golf shop, (928) 525-5250, to book your lesson, or you can schedule a lesson online through Foretees. I'd love to be a part of your journey to better golf this summer. I look forward to seeing you on the lesson tee!!!

This semester has a few options. We have a June Only option, a July Only option, or a June / July Option. The most beneficial and the best value is the June / July option however we offer the June Only option and July Only option just in case there are scheduling conflicts. If you sign up for a class we will assume you are signing up for both June & July. If you want to just do June Only or July Only, please email Justin to clarify. We will have 2 classes offered this season. A Short Game Class and a Full Swing Class. If you've never done Op 36 before, we highly recommend starting with the Short Game Class. The Full Swing class is for people who've done previous semesters before, and have graduated to 100 yards.
