EVACUATION MAP At the June 9 meeting of the Firewise Committee, Highlands Fire Chief Todd Miller briefed the Committee on the new Coconino County Evacuation Zones. To further enhance emergency messaging to the public, the evacuation zones focus on neighborhoods, communities, and residential areas throughout the county. Using pre-identified zones, this project builds on the existing Ready, Set, Go Program and was developed with area partners to enhance pre-evacuations and evacuation messaging. This is a joint partnership with the U.S Forest Service, local fire districts, and the County GIS department. Every effort has been made to make these evacuation zones available to the public. An interactive map can be found at www. coconino.az.gov/evacmap and includes downloadable maps) for each zone along with a QR code. We will be incorporating the new zone numbering and procedures in the “Forest Highlands Emergency Evacuation Plan” booklet and digital signage.
BARK BEETLE REDUCTION COST SHARE PROGRAM The Arizona Department of Foeresty and Fire Managemnet resumed the BBRCS program in September 2022. Please note, fully dead trees (those with no needles) do not qualify for this cost share program because the beetles are typically no longer present. FIREWISE UPDATE & SUGGESTIONS TO HELP KEEP A SAFE COMMUNITY
In 2023 the assigned Firewise zone for Forest Highlands is Zone 3 (made up of lots: 12-30, 425-442, & 516-649). Firewise Safety Checks of the noted lots will be conducted in early June. To help those in Zone 3 and everyone in Forest Highlands, please click here to find the “Safety Check” form used by Firewise Officers. All Forest Highlands residents are encouraged to make/keep their lot(s) safe. Below are a few suggestions in maintaining a Firewise Defensible Space on your lot(s): • Remove dead fuels from your property • Remove dead standing trees and logs from the ground less than 16” in diameter • Remove dead shrubby materials • Cut down dried grasses and flowers • Remove needles, leaves and branches from the ground, leaving an organic covering of approximately 1” • Clear needles and leaves from roofs and gutters • Store firewood at least 30’ (if possible; minimum of 10’) up-hill from your home
