FOUNDATION
The Forest Highlands Foundation has been a longtime supporter of the Food Center, and last year, when we were in tremendous need of help, the Foundation responded quickly and generously. Most notably, they gave $50,000 toward our freezer campaign during Hunger Action Month in September. The $200,000 freezer was installed in November. If the old freezer went out before being replaced, 1400 people would be left without food daily. In April, I will reach my one-year anniversary as the Executive Director of Flagstaff Family Food Center, and it’s been the wildest ride of my life. Donations from our committed donors, like Forest Highlands Foundation, continue to leave me grateful. Such support allows our staff and volunteers to keep our eyes on the mission: “neighbors feeding neighbors, every day!” Undoubtedly, we’re thankful to have the Foundation on our side. Thank you all!
It's no secret that the last three years have challenged nonprofit organizations, forcing many to implode and cease services. Though most of us knew what we signed up for, the challenges from the pandemic and the subsequent recession have required additional endurance. In the first six months of 2022, the number of Flagstaff families seeking emergency food assistance from the Flagstaff Family Food Center was higher than for all of 2021 combined. The kitchen, where we serve a hot meal for dinner every day, has seen a 63% increase in demand in 2022 alone. Several factors have contributed to this great need, with inflation being the main culprit. The United States Department of Agriculture found that food purchased at the grocery store costs 11.8% more in February 2023 than in December 2021. According to Payscale, the cost of food in Flagstaff is already 11% higher than the national average. It's important also to consider the increased cost burden of housing, utilities, and transportation our clients face.
