LEADERSHIP
Dave Stearns, Board President Doug Sutter, General Manager/COO
Dear Forest Highlands Golf Club Membership,
As the holiday season brings the year to a close, I want to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to each of you, our wonderful members, and to my dedicated team members for welcoming me so warmly as your new General Manager and Chief Operating Officer. Since joining this incredible community in January 2024, I have felt nothing but kindness and support, and I am truly honored to be part of the Forest Highlands Golf Club family. Reflecting on this first year, I am reminded of something I shared in my very first Voice in the Pines message back in February—my desire to learn and uphold the rich traditions that make Forest Highlands so special. Over the past year, it has been a true pleasure to experience these traditions firsthand and to witness the incredible sense of pride and connection they bring to our community. As we look to the future, the team and I will remain devoted to our newly adopted mission of “Elevating Excellence” and our commitment to enhancing Forest Highlands’ storied legacy for many years to come. On that note, I would like to take a moment to celebrate our three outgoing Board Members: Mr. Dave Stearns, 2024 Board President; Mr. Dirck Illacobelli, 2023 Board President; and Mr. Jeff Schrock, Multi-Term Board Member and longtime DRC Committee Chair. Please join me in thanking these dedicated leaders for their countless hours of service and the significant contributions they have made to better our club and community. This year has been marked by success, thanks to the efforts of our remarkable team and the engagement of our membership. From delivering exceptional member experiences to achieving stronger financial results than in previous years, we’ve made great strides together.Yet, we are never content to rest on our accomplishments. Instead, we are motivated to continually improve, striving to outdo ourselves day by day and year by year, always with the goal of providing the best possible experiences for our members. One of the most important ways our members have supported this effort is by completing the 2024 Annual Membership Survey. I want to thank everyone who took the time to share their invaluable feedback.Your insights into expectations and experiences help us identify areas for improvement and empower our team to enhance the overall membership experience. This collaborative effort ensures we remain aligned with the needs and desires of our community.

VOICE IN THE PINES • DECEMBER 2024
LEADERSHIP
Looking ahead to 2025, on behalf of your Board of Directors, I would like to take this opportunity to share the new dues & reserve capital payment structure for next year. Beginning January 1, 2025, your total monthly payments will increase from $1,410 to $1,500 (6.4%). This includes an increase in Club Operations and HOA dues, from $1,110 to $1,165 (5%), and an increase in our Reserve Capital Assessment, from $300 to $335 (11.67%). These adjustments were unanimously approved by your Board of Directors during our November Board Meeting. The increase in Club Operations and HOA dues is driven largely by expected increases in labor costs and overall cost of sales. This adjustment will allow us to absorb these rising costs without requiring an across-the-board increase in Forest Highlands prices, ensuring value for our members while maintaining the exceptional hospitality you’ve come to expect. Additionally, this increase supports our team’s ability to consistently exceed members’ expectations and provides the resources needed to effectively support Club Operations and HOA improvements. This also enables our Strategic Planning Committee to collaborate with Club Benchmarking as we embark on a vital three-year long-range planning process. The increase in the Reserve Capital Assessment represents a significant milestone, as it marks the first time the reserve fund will balance cash inflow with cash outflow. In prior years, the reserve fund depended on subsidies from the capital fund or reductions in its own balance, which depleted these critical resources. This thoughtful and strategic adjustment ensures we can fully fund all necessary reserve projects within the calendar year while establishing a strong financial foundation to meet the evolving needs of our aging infrastructure.
I am also thrilled to share exciting news about the Board’s recent decision to appoint Mr. Phil Smith as Forest Highlands Golf Club’s Golf Course Architecture Consultant. After a rigorous search process involving three highly qualified candidates, Phil stood out for his intimate knowledge of Tom Weiskopf’s work. This expertise ensures that as we address future course needs, we can “Preserve, Protect, and Enhance” the legacy of our
two highly celebrated and beloved Weiskopf-designed golf courses. We are confident that Phil’s guidance will serve our community exceptionally well for many years to come.
WHAT OUR MEMBERS ARE SAYING...
In closing, I want to thank you all once again for your warmth, support, and trust during my first year at Forest Highlands. It has been an incredible journey, and I feel truly fortunate to be part of this remarkable community. I wish you and your loved ones a safe, happy, and memorable holiday season, and I look forward to 2025 with great excitement for all the wonderful things we will accomplish together in the years ahead at Forest Highlands Golf Club.
Club Overall Great family environment. Excellent services for activities and golf. I will miss chef Eddie. The food and atmosphere at both the Canyon and Meadow are always superb. There is nothing that touches it. Fabulous staff, great food, wonderful concierge services and although I don’t play golf, I hear that the courses are the best.
Sincerely,
Doug Sutter General Manager / COO Forest Highlands Golf Club

2025 ANNUAL PREPAID MEMBER ASSESSMENT PROGRAM The Board of Directors has approved the continuation of the Prepaid Regular Assessment program for 2025. The prepayment program offers the convenience of paying your monthly assessment for the entire year in advance. This program has provided needed cash flow for the Association, and has been helpful for members in avoiding late fees and the convenience of writing one annual check. What is the Guest Token Incentive Program? Members who prepay their annual assessment receive four Guest Token credits posted to your Credit Book, which can be redeemed for EITHER four (4) complimentary guest rounds of golf, OR four (4) complimentary House Guest Cards good for up to two weeks each. This is a value of up to $800.00. Simply notify the Golf Staff at the time you want to use one of your Guest Token credits for a Guest Round OR notify the Admin Staff at the time you want to use one of your Guest Token credits for a Guest Card. How to participate To qualify for the program, your payment of $18,000 ($1,500 * 12 mos.) must be received by the Administration Office no later than January 23, 2025. Your four (4) guest token credits will be available for your use on your Member Account immediately upon receipt of your payment. December 2024 GREAT PINECONE DROP TURNS 25 FLAGSTAFF’S OWN NYE CELEBRATION by William Godfrey, Forest Highlands Club Historian By William Godfrey Forest Highlands Club Historian Who could have predicted a three-story drop of a decorated trashcan could become such a celebrated Flagstaff tradition.
Back in 1999, the proprietors of the Weatherford Hotel came up with an ingenious idea to toast New Year’s Eve in their own special way.
It was the brainchild of Henry Taylor and Pamela “Sam” Green, the owners of the hotel, located just off Heritage Square at 23 N. Leroux Street.
THE BACK STORY The proprietors had the wild idea to celebrate the new millennium with a takeoff of New York City’s ball drop, but what would it look like? Well…let’s have one of them tell us. Sam Green explained the goal of creating the event 25 years ago. “We wanted to do something fun, a little out there,” shared Green with Scott Cravens of the Arizona Republic. “Something people would remember.” So, back in mid-1999, Ms. Green took a deep dive into the basement of the hotel and its storage room. The only item that held much promise was a discarded trashcan. In a moment of serendipity, Green envisioned attaching lots of pinecones and wrap-around lights connected to the barrel. To create the tapered effect of a pinecone, she used plastic foam in the form of a layered wedding cake. When she flipped the creation over, it had the desired look. But then, she needed to forage the Ponderosa Pine Forest to gather hundreds of pinecones. After she glued them to the exterior, she added paint. Green then wrapped it with colored lights and added a heavy-duty wire hook on top. Permits from the city of Flagstaff followed. Sam Green then enlisted help from local engineers. They explained a 70-pound object had to have enough weight to avoid swaying before descent and a hoist strong enough to hold the Pinecone in place.
William Godfrey is an author, biographer and Forest Highlands Club Historian. He and his wife, Wendy Huck Godfrey, is currently co-chair of the Grants Committee of the Foundation. They have been Members since May 2021. He can be reached at 602-750-1468 or willgodd@gmail.com.

From year one, the make-shift Pinecone and Drop was a big hit with revelers. A few years later, she decided her rudimentary object needed an upgrade.
THE WELDER Green took her idea to Mayorga Welding, a local metalworker.
“Sam showed up in my shop years ago with a sketch on a piece of paper,” shared Frank Mayorga in an October 2024 interview. “She gave me a size range and a maximum weight because the existing hoist on top of the Weatherford could only handle so much.”
“After Sam left, I sat down with the sketch and decided on materials we needed: three sheets of aluminum and some steel tubing for the inside frame,” explained Mayorga. “I ordered the materials and shared the information with Jon Martinez, one of my young welders just out of high school. Then I left on a hunting trip,” Mayorga chuckled. “I came back a few days later from my trip and he had already completed the aluminum Pinecone. Jon, who is my wife’s nephew, cut each pinecone petal out of the aluminum sheets…probably more than a couple hundred petals,” explained Mayorga. “And he then welded them to the frame and even left room inside for lights.” The second-edition Pinecone was transformative. The glowing object created by Martinez has dazzled thousands of revelers over the years. A ROCKWELL PAINTING According to Jeremy Wright, manager of the Over Easy restaurant at the Woodlands Village in Flagstaff, “It is like stepping into a Norman Rockwell painting. The families, the kids, the adults. All standing shoulder-to-shoulder and everyone having a great time.”
The Great Pinecone Drop continues to draw more attendees each year. Initially, the Pinecone was dropped just at midnight. A few years ago, the Hotel added a 10:00 p.m. drop to accommodate families who preferred not to wait the extra hours. More recently, the Weatherford team has added a very popular descent at Noon. It Includes kid’s activities, such as cookie and pinecone decorating, sponsored by the Downtown Business Alliance. This has enabled very young children to experience the drop with their parents.
A CELEBRATION TIMES THREE So, if you are looking for a unique way to ring in the New Year in Flagstaff, you now have three chances to help celebrate the brilliant idea and creation of Sam Green, Jon Martinez and others.
You can learn more about the annual Pinecone Drop from the Weatherford Hotel website, www.weatherfordhotel.com or contact them for reservations at (928) 779-1919.

REMINDER Broken backflow preventers (pictured) and water leaks are costly and can be avoided. - Lindsey Church, Utility Operations Director
PREPARING YOUR HOME FOR THE WINTER
Turn water off in your home and drain the pipes. After draining the pipes close the faucets.
Some Members turn water off at the street. While this is preferred by some, locating outside valves during the snow season results in challenges (including jeopardizing safety) for home owners and Forest Highlands employees.
CONSIDERING HOUSE WATCH LEADING INTO THE WINTER MONTHS? If you are considering House Watch, please email Security at security@fhgc.com. Below is a snapshot of the program:
Unplug recirculating pumps
Set thermostats at 55, it is good for appliances and prevents freezing of pipes if water remains in the pipes.
Weekly House Watch visits include:
• Check security of doors, windows, and locks • Check water heater for correct temperature setting • Check on or off status of water • Check house temperature and heat setting • Check for water leaks or storm damage • Check alarm transmission ability • Exterior perimeter check of structure • Perform reasonable special instructions • Notify the homeowner of any discrepancies
Leave sink cabinet doors open.
Turn hot water heaters to vacation or low (keep them lit).
Lock doors and window.

ALL FOREST HIGHLANDS HOMES ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE AN ALARM SYSTEM THAT COMMUNICATES WITH FOREST HIGHLANDS SECURITY.
ALARM RULE: REQUIREMENTS – SUGGESTIONS
All Forest Highlands homes are required to have an alarm system that communicates with Forest Highlands Security. Home alarm systems must be programmed to: • Detect fire/smoke • Send automatic daily (24-hour) test signals to monitoring station The noted requirements are for the safety of homes and Community. The importance of “Daily Test signals” provides the monitoring station with a notification when a home alarm does not send its automatic daily test signal. When home alarms fail to send an automatic test signal, Gatehouse staff are notified of the instance and will contact the respective Member(s) to assist with having the alarm system communicate properly. The action(s) needed can range from rebooting the alarm panel/alarm communicator, resetting routers/modems, or needing an alarm company to conduct a service call. ***IMPORTANT*** If your alarm system uses a phone line, VOIP phone or internet to communicate alarm signals it is imperative not to place those services on vacation/holiday when departing for the winter season. Disconnection of an active means of communicating alarm signals to the Security Department will be considered a disconnection of the alarm system itself and the owner will be subject to violation procedures. If you are unsure of how your alarm system communicates, please contact Devin Holden, Assistant Director at dholden@fhgc.com or 928-525-5295 or Joe Gordon, Director of Security at jgordon@fhgc.com or 928-525-5290.
